Check your wiring harness on the passenger side firewall. There are reports of chafing on the harness causing a short.
I did open that up and look - nothing obvious there and all the connectors seemed seated properly. I also forgot to mention I have a Tazer. No changes with or without it connected. My battery is hooked up to a charger now, so I'll test again in a day or so and see what that yields.

I believe there is another canbus connector near the back seat. Replace them all. Someone also posted they damaged the sway bar harness and it affected the canbus.

You said no lose grounds. Have you checked ohm across each point? It may look solid, but have excessive resistance. I would normally never say this on a modern vehicle, but since jeep has forgotten how to paint a hinge that does not rust, they have proven they can't be trusted with basic electronics.

I have not - and I can't find all the grounds anyway, but everything I checked was at least secured. I need to drive it now that it is charged, but I'm not excited about the likelihood of getting stuck in the cold today.

Quick update - battery charging did not help. I have ordered a new battery and it should arrive sometime next week. We'll see how that goes.

The new battery has been in since Monday and remarkably all the issues I have described are no longer appearing. It is really hard to believe, since that battery I removed was under 2 years old. Perhaps the aux battery failed and somehow this damaged my main battery? I am concerned because I had the battery "tested" and now what happens in the future - if somethign resurfaces, buy a new battery? Ugh. That said, I'm safe on the road again now and that is a relief.

Last thought here - does anyone remember the thread where someone completely removed their aux battery itself and the associated wiring? I have mine disconnected by the negative terminal on the main battery, and the fuse is pulled, but that's it. I'm wondering if I should take the step to remove it completely. Thanks everyone,

-Ryan

From the get go, when I read your original post days ago, I felt you have battery related issues and no more...

Autozone, Advanced Auto will test your battery and say good or bad but reality is their testing is pure crapola. To properly test you need to fully charge separated battery and do a proper load test. This process can take a couple of hrs... Anyway, battery tests at such auto stores or similar tests by whomever are laughable at best..

As someone that probably bypassed the JL aux battery long long before most anyone (over 76,000+ miles and say 4+ yrs, ago....

I do feel for most guys and gals are better off bypassing the aux battery and just leaving it in place.. Use it as a backup battery to the Main or just leave it be... let it rest in piece. Don't waste time, etc. deleting it.

Reality is, there is no reason really to actually delete the aux battery. Why bastardize a vehicle that has a warranty or that's resale value will be negatively impacted. Then you also have a vehicle that say a factory tech will be hesitant to work on and more.

Anyway, other then to shed say 4 or 5 lbs. there is really little reason to bother deleting the aux.

In less then 5 min. you can bypass the JL's aux battery and be done with it. Drive that now, single battery JL like your old TJ, JK, your old Chevy with their single battery. Yes, still maintain that single battery or...

Thank you. Appreciate the input. I'm certainly not looking for unnecessary work.

I know you've replaced the main battery since the date of the quoted post.

That said, for future reference when you suspect a wonky battery, you'll want to observe the voltage during an engine start event. A battery may pass a bench test with acceptable results, but the voltage could then fall off a cliff when a cranking demand is placed on it.

A failing aux battery, when still fully connected to the vehicle's electric system, will accelerate the draining of the Jeep's main battery. A parasitic draw in the broadest sense. That's why conventional wisdom suggests replacing both batteries at the same time, or disconnecting (or removing) the aux battery to prevent said parasitic draw.

I had replaced both together in January '21. I am now running completely disconnected from the aux with a brand new main battery only. I appreciate all the input!

I am running this battery for a couple of years so it could certainly be an issue. I have NOT tried changing it. Perhaps it is time to just buy another one and see what happens. I wish there was some way to confirm before I drop cash on a replacement.

New battery $250 from Oreillys vs 300 just to connect up computer and diagnose at dealer. The manufactures batteries are not good over 3 years.
