Has anyone tried a rack like this for their soft top Jeep? I only need to drive a couple miles to the water and this like a good option for my fishing kayak and sup.

I would never try that. It’s not good for the SUP—especially if you go over 20mph or any speed bump. It’s also a fairly large moment (torque) to put on your hitch.

I agree it looks sketchy but I’m hoping someone has tried it successfully. For the price it could be a better solution than a permanent rack with a soft top.

No, they are common for RV’s and campers. The question is whether the increased wind resistance would be a problem on a Jeep.

Yea but they are made to have two points of attachment. Look at the diagram of the camper set up. It would be like mounting a kayak on a roof rack with a single cross bar instead of two . I would be surprised if it didn’t bend or snap off the mount sitting still let alone driving

Better hope that kayak isn't longer than ten feet or it may be an expensive trip to the creek. Better hope the launch area doesn't have speed bumps either. The grass is almost touching the one in the pic. Lol.

I have three kids. So I needed to haul five kayaks. That math don't add even in my ZR2. I bought a cheap trailer off marketplace and built a removable wood rack to fit on it. Basically the straps holding the kayaks down hold the frame in the trailer too. Super solid even at 70 mph with all five kayaks on it. Probably didn't cost much more than that contraption.

Had the Yakima box left over from another project. Tongue mounted that. It stores and transports five paddles, vests, gear, anchors.... never have to pack for a trip. Just hook up and go

A trailer would be great but the main attraction of the vertical rack is that it is $149. If I can’t find someone who has successfully used it I’ll go with a bed extender (goal post) or the barricade HD rack. I live one mile from the water so it’s just for very short trips.
