Yesterday I went out to a local off road park. It was a wet and slippery day.

I set up to climb a steep hill i have done many times when dry. Well wet is a whole different beast.

I stayed in the shallow ruts as I made my way up. The crest of the hill gets above 30 degree pitch.

As I started to gain momentum to crest I lost traction.

Sliding backwards is not fun, but in my lack of control I was heading into ruts way deeper than my Jeep can handle.

It took a lot of calming down and trying to figure out what to try next.

I was surprised to realize I forgot I had lockers. So after utilizing all the tools I had on board I was still really struggling against gravity.

I got out and scoped out my situation, and I felt like I was in trouble.

With it being a rainy day not many people at the park, and the hill was all shrubs. I had no anchor to winch from.

That in mind I got in and tried to climb over to the smaller ruts in hope that if I could get there I might be able to back down.

No luck, but i did find myself moving forward with decent momentum. So I aimed for the crest kept it in 3rd gear 4lo and got myself bellied out on the line I was on.

From there a bit of backing off slightly and giving it the beans a few more times and I was free.

I’ve had a day like that off-roading where traction was gone and nothing seemed to work until I spotted a different line. Took a lot of trial and error, just like you described. Once I was stuck, I even looked up low-cost safety gear ideas on pedirayudas.com for another trip, and found some solid tips.
