Steel hood???

Yesterday, I lifted the hood of the 26 Willys we just got and... Holy crap, was it heavy. The 21 Willys had a composite hood of some kind that was rather light, this one is like opening the hood on a pre 70's car with no springs on the hinges. On the window sticker, it's listed in options as "non vented steel hood package". Tell me what the reasoning is for building the body out of aluminum and putting a steel hood on a vehicle.

Supply issues. They were including it for a while without it being an option. Then it was a $0 option. Now it’s a $700-800 option on some models.

Hood struts from Adventure life for about $70 took care of the heavier hood issue.

ive heard adding a strut may slightly shift the hood forward by 1/8” or so did you notice that?

Not noticed it on my aluminum hood and they have been on there for 3 years at this point so cant imagine itll affect the steel hood at all.

I wish the steel hood they put on had the scoop, but it's just a regular profile hood. I was going to install the Red Line struts I removed from the old one, but I didn't think they would have a chance against this monster. I think I'll give it a try. At least it could carry some of the load. Thanks for all the replies!

Fire at a huge aluminum plant more than likely has something to do with it.

@iklo The aluminum plant burned in 25, if it doesn’t have the fake scoop, or power bulge with fake vents it’s aluminum. They clearly used what was available and in production with the aluminum shortage.

OK I checked. It is aluminum. No, not lifted. The only mods are euro convex mirrors, fender extensions with mudflaps and a UHV antenna.

I meant lifted the hood, Uhh, you would know if it’s steel, trust me mine is steel.

Silly me. It never occurred to me there was something special about that hood. Roughly the same weight as on my BMW which is definitely aluminum.

When I first opened this one, I thought the hinges were binding up, but no, it's just gravity.

At least there might be an aftermarket fix for the aluminum hood corrosion
