No need to worry, the Sport S has the same size tire as the Willys.

A note about tire heights, they are spec’d mounted on approved width wheel with no load on them. Once mounted on the vehicle and the weight is on them, they squat somewhat. That causes the static loaded height to be shorter than most expect.

Much appreciated. I was hoping your reference to the Sport S would have nipped this issue in the bud, but the Sport and Sport S are only offered with 245's, while Willys has the 255's. I confirmed this on the Jeep website, but maybe I'm missing something?

Good point about tire height too. I was only looking for a mild upsize anyway, and just happened to find a good deal on some Willys takeoffs in my local area.

Hmm. Yep. You’re right. I was still thinking of the JKs, I guess.

My sister put Rubicon take offs, 285/70/17s on her Sport and had zero issues. Even her speedometer was correct. She said it was 3 MPH fast with the 245s.

Interesting insight from your sister too. Another forum member had the same observation and noted that the speedo on his Sport was more accurate with 255's. Go figure, but it's just another good reason to switch to the Willy's config, as long as the additional weight is negligible (and I think it is).

I know this is an old thread but to the original poster - I'm assuming you have a manual transmission - when you switched were there any problems as you mentioned about shifting and the computer? Did you need to change the wire information with a scan/tazer so that you're jeep didn't go in limp mode?

Just like my current JL Sport, I've always run steelies on my Jeeps and usually kept the stock-sized tires. However, I am currently eyeballing a set of Willys takeoff rims/tires so I can upgrade from 245 to 255 tires and steel to alloy rims. Just had two minor questions:

-Will the slight upsize affect shift points or speedo calibration?
-Will the weight of the larger tires be cancelled out by the lighter (I think) aluminum rims?

Just looking for a mild upgrade so I don't have to spend $$$ on recalibrating anything or upgrading brakes, etc. Appreciate any/all feedback and happy Jeepin'!
my speedo has been about 2-3mph off sence the day i got my car, stock willys tires and all. I assume youd *want* to recalibrate your speedo, but honestly just use a gps speedomoter and memorize the difference between GPS and the number on the dash.

i went from the 33's to 35's last week, i cant really tell a difference in acceleration or speed, tho i do have the 3.0. braking is noticably worse but not by a ton. you most likely wont be able to tell, any butt dyno will be 90% placebo haha

Yep...the small difference between 245 and 255 tires made no noticeable difference on the speedo. I do notice a difference in braking, but it's not that bad and hasn't caused premature wear on my brakes after three years. All good.

I have an automatic, and have not noticed any difference in how it shifts. The difference between 245 and 255 is so miniscule, that it barely affects drivetrain operation and speedo reading. The only noticeable difference is with braking, but it's not terrible and hasn't caused premature wear on my braking system.

How did you get the Willy’s wheel/255s mounted in the tire carrier?
