The software update changes the percentage of the pumps output depending on the steering angle and the rpm of the engine. Basically it changed the assist level the pump supplies. On a belt driven pump the output pressure is basically fixed and the assist the box receives is regulated by a spool valve in the box. As you turn the wheel the spool valve basically twists and opens up the orifice in the box to provide assist. The assist is basically adjusted by making the spool valve harder or easier to twist.
In the electric pump they control the output through the computer, this is how on some cars like the Grand Cherokee you can switch the feel of the steering through the radio controls. Normal, comfort, or sport. They all make the Jeep drive different. There is no adjustments on the JL, the flash is basically the same thing in a way. It adjusted the feel of the steering.
It didn’t necessarily need the flash because of the new box, it is more of in an addition to the new box if that makes sense.
