Russ and I went over Sharman pass on 9/13 from the Troy Meadows side. There are places with lots of downed trees that have been cleared. About two or three miles from the peak there was a downed tree across the road with no way around. Russ said he had a saw... I thought he was kidding, but I took the saw and started cutting. This is a small foldable saw. IF you know Russ,. you know obstacles on the trail are just part of going down the trail :) It actually did make it more interesting The tree was about 15" in diameter where we made the cut. WE took turns and got maybe 2/3rd through. Then we put a tree saver on a tree on the opposite side of the downed tree from where we were. Added a D-ring and tow strap and rope. Pulled it with a jeep and snap. Dragged the log all the way to the side away from us. The other half slid two feet down on the trail as there was about 80 feet of tree going up a hill. We used a highlift jack to push it a couple feet towards us which made a large enough gap to drive through. We did not pull that half with a tow strap as we were concerned that it might slide farther down on the road. There was one more section at the crossroad where you would turn to the left to go to the peak or straight to do down. The road going down had a large tree across the road. However, this time about 100 feet to the left , someone had cut a section out of a downed tree large enough for us to drive through. It was not cut with a chainsaw so it might have been just a group going down the trail.

There are many dead trees in the area where fires burned. If you are going in that area be careful especially after storms or wind. Take a chainsaw If you have room. The area where we ran into the tree, had downed trees everywhere, but they had been cleared. All chainsaw cuts. The tree we cut, must have fallen recently.
Even the trail to Monache Meadows had a coupled downed trees across the main part of the road, but had been cut with by passes. If you are there during a windy period it would not be surprising if you experience recently downed trees blocking a road. Check weather and conditions ahead of time and make sure you let people know where you are.

And Thanks to @Russ Chung for another fun trip!

Cheers

Were the down trees on sherman pass road or just the trails? I am going to try and make it up there this year before they close the roads for winter.
