Is there a way to have an overlay of satellite imagery when viewing the built-in GPS Map View? Hell even a way to have Google Maps run through an app?

If you have iOS, Google Maps will run through Apple CarPlay, and it has the option for Satellite Imagery. I am assuming you could do the same using Android.

You can, and it is great. At least when you have a signal, it can be helpful off road. I was in the back woods of Kentucky last week and could not really tell where a trail went. I used that feature and it helped to locate it. (It wasn't mapped, so we spotted it in the photo.) It doesn't take much of a signal, either, to get enough data to build the image.

You can download sections on google maps and use them offline.

Yes, if you know where you are going. ;)
Better off to use your Ipad for the larger screen and better resolution, however your Ipad must be Cell capable meaning Ipads do not have GPS without being mobile data capable, that said you do not have to have data service active it means that Ipads only have GPS with that option and the GPS works without mobile data.
