Put on the RT Off Road tail gate hi lift mounts for the JKs on my JL.

https://www.rtoffroad.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=RT26083

It nearly fits perfectly, the only difference from the JK to the JL is the bolt size for tailgate but $8 of new bolts and a quick grinding of one bracket with a Dremel fits perfectly. There are 3 bolts in the kit for the hinges that are not needed all the rest of the bolts in the are used.

Tools needed:
  • T55 torx bit
  • 17mm wrench
  • 2 10mm wrenches
  • Dremel or anything to widen a slotted hole
Extra hardware to buy:
  • 3 M10x70 1.50 pitch bolts
  • 6 M10 washer

Steps:
  1. Use T55 torx to remove the bottom two hinge bolts
  2. Take the base plate 2 bolts and 4 washers and bolt the base plate on I used a electrical tape on the back side of the washer touching the hinge to protect the paint
  3. Take the L bracket and widen the slotted hole to fit the new bolt, I used a Dremel
  4. Remove the top hinge bolt closest to the tail light
  5. Bolt loosely on the L to the bracket using a spacer from the kit and the last M10 bolt and last 2 washer
  6. Bolt on the extension piece with the hardware from the kit
  7. Put HiLift on the base plate
  8. Using the carriage bolt from the kit plus the other spacer and knob from the kit, but the bolt through a hole in the HiLift
  9. Attach the two wing nuts and some washers to attach the bottom of the HiLift to the base plate
  10. Tighten the bolt on the top hinge

There is a slight clearance issue with the jack and the tail light if you push the tailgate past the last detent.

@Sheepjeep Thank you for this post, wanted to see if you could give an update, is it holding up strong still? Any rattling on the roads? Also what size tire do you have mounted on the spare? I'm running a 34 with no issues on the tailgate, and was wanting to do this as well, but was wondering if the additional weight of the hijack, along with my 34" would cause any problems. Is your tailgate showing any signs of stress?

Thanks again!

I do not run the HiLift fill time for a few reasons, mainly to protect the jack itself from exposure of the elements and only plan on using it for off road use. So that being said any effects of running the jack fill time but I am not concerned with weight of the jack on the hinge seeing as the jack is mounted so close to the hinge so less leverage applied than with a larger tire.

I am still running the stock Rubicon tire there is about an inch between the tire and upper mount with the upper mount adjust as close to the tire as possible. I feel like you could mount a 35 with the amount of play in that upper mount.

This won't work for me, I have 60" Hi-Lifts and that thing will stick out above my hard top quite a ways, LOL. I really wish the aftermarket would get going on jack mounts.
