Rim width Q?

I've got a 2026 Sport. Stock for now.
I dont intend to use it on anything higher than a level 2 or 3 trail, desert roads/trails and mountain fire roads.

I know this has probably been asked in many ways before but I gave up after reading a couple hundred posts and decided to just ask...

I'm looking at wheels and tires and would like to know if theres any real advantage (giving my intended use) to having wider rims (8-9" on 285/70-17 tires) than let's say stock Rubicon take-offs and 285/70-17 tires?

Obviously there a big $$$ difference between take-offs vs new, but any real advantage in buying the wider rims based on my plans?

There is a sweet spot for tire width vs wheel width (@Discount Tire can help you with that). One disadvantage of having a wide rim is increased odds of unseating the tire bead when aired down.

Ive seen the width range for the tires and thx for the air down warning.

The only thing I can think of for a disadvantage would be a narrower contact patch with narrow wheels. That definitely applies to street tires but would it apply on dirt considering I'd probably be aired down on any sketchy parts?

Those are stock size tires that were on my Willys when I bought it, about 33s. What tire size do you want to run? Future plans for lift or even larger tires?

Its going to depend on the specific tire and what they recommend most tires in that size work on a 7.5-9.5 wheel.

Most likely not going above a 33" tire like the BF Goodrich K02-03's 285 70 17's. No lift is planned as I'm not going to be running larger tires nor more technically challenging trails. (Who knows what the future may bring?)
Just fire roads, desert roads/trails and such. Nothing beyond a 2-3 rating that may require 35-37" tires.

Just asking to see if theres a benefit to a 8-8.5" wheel vs the stock 7.5" based on my planned usage.

Im not against buying aftermarket wheels. I just dont know if they're needed based on my planned usage.

Not going bigger than stock tire sizes no there is no upside to changing wheels other than style or weight.

Thx for the info.
Thats where I was heading but needed to bounce it off someone for a reality check.

Plus the aftermarket wheels I was looking at closely resembled some black factory take-off wheels, only 1" wider.

Here on the left coast I can get Rubicon take-offs with less than 100 miles for $1300 vs the same tires and aftermarket wheels for almost 2x that.
Not that im cheap but your retirement won't last long if you throw away $$$ needlessly.
