I painted all the faded plastic on my XJ. What I could ‘t remove, I carefully taped off. I used a Rustoleum paint made specifically for use on plastic, Krylon makes a similar paint called Fusion. The end result was far better than I could have ever hoped for.

Do you plan to paint all of the other fading black plastic too? Did it require any surface preparation?
Not yet. I used alcohol wipes to be sure there wasn’t any residue, pulled the wiper blades and arms off, then used a step stool so I could get even coats. I did it with direct sunlight overhead. I was pretty happy with the results. The shade of black also matched the mirrors perfectly.

Looks great Jeremy. How does it hold up to rain/water & how often do you need to apply it to keep that look?
It looks fantastic, like its new from the factory. Not greasy or shiny, but black with a tiny bit of luster. It doesn’t wipe off on your hands or clothes if you rub it.

I just applied it yesterday evening and it hadn’t rained in it yet. I haven’t used it since I used to detail cars years ago. I haven’t done anything to the exterior of the Jeep other than an occasional wash since I got it in January 2019. It’s parked outside under an oak tree. If I remember correctly it’ll last for months parked outside in the weather. I’ll update.

Back in the 1990's I designed several of the formulations. I wrote the FAQ for the sci.polymers newsgroup.
Amazing the amount of expertise on this forum. Do you have a preferred product or treatment for the care and feeding of our black bumpers and bits? Thanks in advance.

Two fender question as I brushed against some stiff pine branches.
  • Best way to get pitch off the plastic fender?
  • Best way to fix scuffs and scratches short of replac
I know it won’t be perfect, but hopefully I can minimize the trail rash
