JL: Errand Duty mods

Just curious what some of you have done to make the JL more errand-friendly.
I have a truck. But it’s not as fun to drive and it’s also stored so a hassle to get in and out. I also had a small trailer but it was more hassle storing it as well.

Last weekend, I had a house project and needed to pick up some lumber. I made-do with taking out the back windows and stacking it up on the tailgate ?

Later, I started thinking about some mods that might be useful carrying bulky items. I have a soft top so traditional roof racks are not applicable but maybe a rack that attaches to the roll bars. Maybe a hitch attached cargo/ladder rack. I kind of wish the tailgate could be easily removed. That would make it much more useful.

Any other useful tips, I’m all ears. Aside from buying a Gladiator!

Though I didn't do it for the purpose of running errands, it is definitely very errand friendly. Removed all the trim panels and the carpets, remove the tub in the cargo area, placed a waterproof container on the driver side rear, placed a horse stall mat in the cargo area. The end goal is going to be to X-Line all the exposed green metal you see. One of these days!

As for now it makes cleaning out the Jeep really easy, garden hose. Occasionally some soap if it's been a couple months.

Purchase a cargo area mat, if you've not already done so.

An exoskeleton-style roof rack would provide the carrying capacity that you might require from time to time. A hitch-mount cargo basket would probably be useful, also.

I bought a 5×8 trailer from Harbor Freight. It comes in really handy for the Home Depot trips or hauling anything. It's also easier to step up on.

Now try not to break the bank with this one... but a s*** ton of bungee chords are awesome when with the cargo tie down hooks. Keeps all my stuff from flying around the cab on the road and the trail!

Roof rack & tie down straps are the way to go.

I've got a Rhino Rack on a 2dr and I've brought home many pieces of lumber including 4x8 sheets. Just takes a minute or two to strap it down and you're good to go.

My mistake when I was trying to get wife interested in a GMC 2500 for hauling, was coming home with a 3/4 4x8 piece of plywood tied to the roof of my 2 door JK. "well if the jeep can do that, why do you need a pickup...?"

I bought a JT... lol... really though, there are some great ideas posted. But if I did a lot of "Big haul errands" I would invest in a trailer. If you don't use the rear seats, I would do a rear seat delete.... I think your opening pic handled it perfectly .... working with what you got !

I put together one of the cheap harbor freight cargo trailers (mainly because it folds up to store in the garage.)
