First, I just wanted to clarify that I'm deaf and I wanted to check with you guys about something that I noticed. When I come to a full stop and the ESS shuts off the engine, I feel something "clanking" through my foot on the brakes. The reason why I quoted clanking is because I'm not sure if that's the correct term as I can't hear ;)

Do you guys hear/feel something moving when the engine is off after coming to a full stop? It's a very faint feeling so I'm not sure if it's something that can be heard easily.

I don’t feel anything constantly if that’s what you mean, but you’ll feel it as it stops and when it restarts. Sometimes it’s smoother than others.

I do occasionally get vibrations from the audio through the pedal, but given your post that's probably not the issue. But just in case have you tried turning down the audio?

Do you have the 2.0 or 3.6? I have the 2.0 and feel nothing when the engine shuts off. I have been getting vibrations when the engine cooling fan goes to high speed, but feel that more through the steering than I do the brake pedal so that doesn't seem like it would be the case here either.

Any other details of when this happens? Hot or cold jeep, hot or cold outside, etc?

I feel it about a second or two after the engine stops. It usually clank/clicks about 2-3 times then stops. It almost feels as if something is shifting then comes to a rest.

I have the 3.6 and it happens pretty much every time I stop. The ESS won't engage if the Jeep is cold so it has to be hot. It's been doing that throughout the winter and still does it today (60 degree weather).

One thing I do notice on my 2.0 is when shut off there is a relay that clicks 2 or 3 times that I have no clue what it's for. Only happens at hard shut-off, not when the ESS engages. But I'm wondering if it's something similar?

I feel for you @cns721 ... I hate odd noises and/or vibrations that don't make sense... best of luck getting it sorted out!

Maybe you can have someone along that could hear if anything is clanking?

I will say, we have been driving 2.0T and 3.6 alot during our test drives, and the ESS on the 3.6 is much more unrefined than the 2.0T. The 2.0T is barely noticeable. With the 3.6, there is no doubt the engine shut off.

Normal for ESS is to train yourself to hit that button just to the right of the start button every time you fire it up.
That turns off ESS.
That is normal.

Likely has little do with ESS itself, may be something like your brakes losing vacuum.

Definitely feel audio through pedal and the steering wheel. Never had that in any other vehicle.

I have the 3.6 and it's not smooth by any means. But an actual feel of "clank" or metal I have never noticed. Perhaps a trip to the dealer may be in order. Good luck:like: keep us posted.

I believe what your feeling is just the hydraulic pressure in the transmission releasing and the Jeep settling under no load
Much like when you shift from park into gear while on the brakes you feel the Jeep creep up from torque applied to the drivetrain, just in reverse order lol

I think I get the ā€œclankā€ you’re describing every now and then. Usually after a full stop then making a turn. Is that when you feel it?

Hi cns721,
We understand why this may be concerning. If you decide to have this concern addressed by your dealer, please send our team a private message and we would be happy to offer some additional assistance!
