I bought the XR package because of the great value it provides over the standard Rubicon. But with all things from the factory, there will always be compromises to keep the product within specifications and to keep price in check. I’ve had several vehicles from lightly modified to heavily modified, and I am now of the mindset to keep it stock from a functionality side and just improve based on use and want (hence the XR foundation).
So without doing big changes to the factory geometry, what are some things that can be done to improve on the already great RubiconXR platform?
I think areas of improvement would be:
- Steering looseness (dead spot in the center), probably Lca and general strengthening- track bar and sector shaft brace? Drag link?
- Ride quality- it is ‘ok’- I think for most peoples uses including myself, something for primary street use that would get as close as possible to making potholes disappear, and handle some washboards with more comfort - but still be able to hit the hard trails as a secondary. Would this be a shock only solution?
- Possible 37s? Is this possible without compromising the factory geometry much? Maybe by just 1” spacers? Or would this end up with needing too many additional mods?
I know there are aftermarket parts for almost everything on this JL, but the intent here is for improvements that have the most impact without going overboard. What are the key suspension and steering improvements?
