I just ordered the Aries action trac running boards. They come with a basic toggle switch in the plug and play. Instead I’d rather use one of my Aux factory switches. I don’t know much electrical so I had a couple questions I’m hoping to clear up.

1. There is a 20A fuse built in between battery and wiring harness. If I go to aux 1 or 2 which are constant power will I need to swap the 40 amp down to a 20 amp in the fuse box to match the other fuse?

2. What should the Uconnect setting be as far as battery, ignition, etc?
I will need power turned on so that they serve their function of deploying the step when I open the door to the Jeep obviously.

3. Has anyone done something similar by wiring to aux instead of supplied switch even if another brand like AMP or RSE?

I attached the plug and play diagram.

1. There should be a 20 amp fuse in the line to protect the devices, you could replace the fuses in the fuse box under the hood for a 20 amp, F93 for switch 1 and F92 for switch 2. This would be a cleaner install but if you go to change that circuits use just remember that it's 20 amps not 40 amps. The other option is to leave the 40 amp in the fuse box and put a 20 amp fuse on the pig tail end of the wire where you tap into it. Leaves the 40 amp in place for future use and gets the desired protection.

2. Battery and latched mode and leave it activated, I imagine that the plan would be you open the door with the Jeep off and the step drops. The deactivate the switch when you want it to stay closed with door opening.

3. I haven't done it but in theory it will work, it's just a programmable relay

Thanks I appreciate it. I’ve been searching the forum to find someone else that did it but haven’t found any.

I really just don’t see the point of drilling into the dash when I have no other use for the aux switches yet.

In case anyone wants to try to forego the plug and play power switch. I did not find a way to do it.

I tried ignoring the switch wires altogether and running power and switch to the aux. That failed.

Then I tried running power to the red/white constant power and switch wires to aux. that failed as well.

However, I was able to run power to the red/white constant and then use the supplied switch. This was a nice option if you have the factory 6 wires with the aux switches, instead of dealing with passing through the firewall. I flipped the harness so the long driver side wires and power wires came up the passenger side.

Note: make sure you swap that constant red/white wire’s fuse from the 10 amp to 20. There are spares in the fuse box blanks.

Did come with one bad door sensor. Otherwise really cool power step.

Time to thread necro!

I foolishly ordered my jeep without aux switches, but I also bought the actiontrac steps. I'm going to install them tomorrow, but my long-term plan is to buy the aux switch wiring kit and then retrofit it.

If I do get around to that, I plan to revisit this. I think it should be pretty possible to connect the switches to the steps!

I wired my Aries boards to a 15 Amp Aux Switch #3 in the passenger footwell (not under the hood) -- Aries system never came close to drawing even 15 Amps. Better a little lower fuse than higher. I did not use the provided Aries harness portion with the fuse, only the rest of the harness. Use the black ground wire that would have connected to the ground in the fuse harness -- that is your main ground, I just cut off the pin end and put an eye connector and connected it to one of the many ground connectors behind passenger foot well kick-panel. Ohm out to identify one of the two red wires that is primary power wire, connect that to Aux 3 wire for power. The other red wire would have been power to go through the Aries provide switch if used, just tape it off it will be dead. The ground wire with spade connector next to the two red wires is only ground for the light in the unused switch, so just tape it off as it is unused. Flip the rest of the harness, as harness driver side will now flow down passenger side, and harness passenger side is long enough to reach over to the drivers side. Pictures are 1. the fuse harness - unused 2. the three connector end that would have connected to the unused switch - one red is power to the boards the other red goes to the next picture 3. red and black wire with pin ends, black is primary ground - use it for ground, the red is a dead wire.
