Aftermarket amp and speakers, why mess with the head unit? I find the 8.4 unit works great, the controls are good, and it looks factory. It can easily be the base for an audiophile quality system if you want to add a dsp, amps, and high end speakers. If you just want loud and clean, amps and mid level speakers will do the job.
Bingo.

Correct because the 509 doesn't have navigation built in.

Much better combo.

I have the x409, it’s a nice system. I also replaced all my speakers, added amps and subs. I didn’t pay anywhere near the MSRP, would do it again in a heartbeat for what I paid. It’s also nice it also serves as a light controller for accessories so I have everything connected to it… no SPod needed. It integrates right into the Jeep, keeps all controls/screens, and has the off-road pages too.

With this said… it’s not worth the $3k MSRP, probably why the new system is priced more competitively…

I looked into the new system, not replacing mine, just curious… it has better screens, ability to incorporate dash cams, and wireless CarPlay… rest looks similar… but, they probably changed some stuff to take the price down.

It looses the built in navigation. I'm sure most of us use Carplay by now. Also nice system. Like the tweeter mounts.

Yeah… don’t think I’ve ever used the built in Nav… CarPlay has real time traffic

Built in nav is the modern equivalent of a 6 CD changer. A must have in it's day that became quickly outdated.

true… and my kids… “you have to connect a wire for CarPlay… that’s basic”

I have the x409 and alpine speakers in the roll bar, and added a wireless CarPlay adapter from Amazon. I like it but my main reason getting was the external accessories control, I have my lockers, compressor and winch power controlled through the radio. I also really like the front camera, you can adjust the guide lines to line up with the wheel to help line up on a obstacle.

but, if it was just for the head unit, i probably wouldn’t have picked it.

@Terpsmandan Maybe I missed this, where does it say you lose factory nav? Looks like they still retain the nav button on the bezel.

I installed a couple of the older restyle units in JK's with a few variations of speakers (one used all OEM speakers and another with all speakers replaced with the Alpine JK specific speakers) with decent results. It's an aftermarket platform so you get all of the benefits (RCA outputs, cam inputs and video outputs, etc...) which makes it better than the OEM unit with some of the bonus' of the off road maps and lighting control. I've used many Alpine products over the years, and if you can handle the cost, it'll be worth it!
