2023 JL 2 door, Uconnect5, stock speakers.

I'm planning to upgrade all speakers
  • Dash - upgraded 3.5" speakers
  • Knee - upgraded 6.5" speakers (with new housing)
  • Soundbar - upgraded 6.5" or 6x9 speakers
  • Powered sub either underneath the seat or back trunk (haven't decided how much base I want)
What I can't figure out is if I should go with a 6 channel amp to power all 6 speakers or if I should go with a 4 channel amp to power the knee/soundbar speakers and let the head unit power the 3.5" dash speakers? I just don't know, overall, how much volume/sound quality I'll be losing out on if I don't power the dash speakers.

Thoughts?

It really comes down to how much control you want. I would do the 6 channel option only for the ability to control each channel to keep levels matched between the drivers.

I went with the Quart Stage 6 with the replacement sub for the factory Alpine. If you do not have the factory Alpine, they make a tailgate sub kit with a 12". Also added a Fosgate DSR-1 DSP for tuning but haven't really dipped a toe into the settings as I am very happy with the sound. Probably going to check with a stereo shop that has a RTA once the hardtop goes back on this fall and have them check it out.

How much $$$ is in the budget? I'd go 5-ch amp with some sort of DSP built in, run the dash upper/front as a component set L/R and then the speaker bars as a rear L/R. Then have a Sub off the 5th channel. Keep the parts/amps to a minimum, rewire speaker runs where necessary, etc... have learned a lot this year with mine.

Oh interesting, didn't know you can treat the fronts as components. If you use 2 channels to run the fronts, you can still control the sound coming out each separate dash/knee speaker?

Nope!! The only way to control each driver separately is to give each it's own channel. And a DSP channel if you want to be snazzy. The last big install in a JL I did use a 10 channel DSP and two five channel amps.

It would be a component set so the upper dash and knee speaker per side would be a pair separated by a crossover that typically comes with the speaker set, single amp pull per component pair.
