Hi all. Quick question for those of you with a 270 degree awning. Does the rear of the awning provide adequate coverage of the tailgate when it is open? I'm curious about being able to effectively use the tailgate table in the rain etc.

Thanks!

Great question. I’m in CA and i’ve only been out in the rain a few times. I lowered the pole closest to the camera a bit so it would run off away from the tailgate. It really depends on the strength and direction of the wind but the tailgate area was dry enough to cook.

Thanks for the response. I was thinking that all bets were off in a monsoon but if the tailgate stays dry in a light/normal rain then that is encouraging news.

One thing to think about when deciding which side mount to get, the rear will be a triangle with the side opposite the awning being the "point" of the triangle. Right side mount will fully cover the tailgate, but will require you to walk around it. Left side mount you may have some exposure at the open tailgate, but the walk path will be fully covered.

I have the 23Zero on my trailer, here's a stock photo to give you an idea, on mine, each red line is about 6':

Well, looking back up at Chuck's post, looks like his has a significantly different layout than mine. Definitely something to think about when picking.

mine is a bit different. Good point about which side to mount it on. Mine is mounted on the drivers side because my RTT opens to the passenger side which creates an awning to the side. So I do have a pretty solid 270.

Don’t do it. It’s 70lbs plus. I had mine on and it’s great but I’m looking to lighten the load with a moonshade awning or something similar. I just finished removing mine to install an ars rack and what a difference it made. It’s not going back on. It made that much of a difference. It handled like a boat. Loved it but I’m looking at other options. I’ve seen pics of members posting 270LT which comes in at about 50lbs. I would only recommend it for large families or short jaunts.

70lbs is pretty stout. I'm looking at smaller 40lb units primarily for camping or bigger events. Outside of that it would be off the roof.

Are you running an RTT?

No tent. I use a deepsleep air mattress. I currently have a side awning but I'm revamping my camping approach for 2024 with a focus on ease of set up and breakdown.

10-4, we're kind of the opposite, we normally basecamp and work remote for a week at a time.

While our 270 is self supporting, I'd only risk that short term and dead calm. Staking and tieing is the real time suck.

I'm envious of your ability to stay out long term. Right now with all the family comittments its only weekend trips. That and its just me and my 6 yr old son. I don't think my wife or daughter would be caught dead camping. Oh well, we sneak in what time we can which is why I want to focus less on the mundane, time consuming tasks.

The beauty as I see it with the freestanding awning, should guying be necessary with a wind load, at least I'm not wrestling an 8' side awning by myself while my "helper" wanders off to climb a tree.

I have the shorter Rhino Batwing, i’m not sure what it weighs, but the difference in performance is negligible. If you calculated the CG of the jeep and the moment (distance above CG) of the awning it’s really not that different than having a 140 pound person in the back seat.

There are lots of variables, when the RTT is on, I run all my shocks in firm, when just the awning the rear shocks are medium with slightly lower tire pressure. Nothing scientific just for comfort.

I use’d to use the jeep for work and the awning was awesom for changing locations and getting setup quickly.[/QUOTE]

Mine is installed driver side to avoid tailgate too. I have not used it in the rain, yet, but something I'm wary of is runoff from the uncovered roof draining off the back of the Jeep between the roof and hatch window. I have some overlap at the hatch, but the awning doesn't cover enough of the roof to prevent buildup and runoff
