So this is normal? I was concerned over time I might be breaking something.
Whatever the actual cause of it is, it is a normal sound off road. My Xterra went 100k miles with LOTS of off road use before I sold it and that sound was never anything more than mildly annoying. My Wrangler has done it since the first time I took it off road.

Like I said before, I've never gotten it to happen on pavement with either vehicle so that's something different from what you're experiencing.

The same sound happens around town, but it's rare and mostly avoidable. I'm thinking it also is happening when clutch is used under load. 1st gear, stop and go type traffic and quickly hitting the clutch to make a stop will cause it.

Same sound on both our manuals. I can really hear it on the pickup when pulling into the garage. You're good.

Hmm, I haven't experienced that sound in my 6MT. Even sudden stop pushing the clutch in I don't hear that. Haven't gone off road.

I just spoke to one of our local offroad shops this morning, comes highly recommended from a local Jeep club, and they tell me it's normal too so I guess I don't worry about it.

My clutch has and still will make this sound since the day I got it (going on 4 years/40k miles). To rid myself of this I did nothing more than change my pedal style; instead of coming off the gas then the clutch; I come off the clutch then the gas. I’m not talking about seconds here…my engine does not “rev”. Just when I start a gear change, the clutch is the first pedal I push instead of the second; hope that makes sense. If this is the way you are already doing it then please disregard. Took me some time to get use to as I found this method counter intuitive to the way I was taught and drove other standards (mustangs/shop trucks).

This has effectively eliminated my noise. I believe it has something to do with the layout of the pressure plates and how the springs that are built in cushion the engagement disengage while the drivetrain is under load vs freewheeling. Could be just me too; but having driven two 6sp MT JLs on a regular basis (one a 2019 the other a 2021) both have this issue and both are nullified when I made this change. Watch the first couple videos from ACT; they did a great job laying out the slop built into the factory clutch. Hope this helps.

I don't hear the noise very often, and definitely not during normal driving through the gears. Aside from climbing down from obstacles in 4L, I mainly hear this noise when I'm in 1st gear crawling around a parking lot or in a line of traffic having to quickly stop (i.e. abruptly use the clutch under load as was said earlier). What I've done to adjust for it, and pretty much removed it from happening, is to let the engine wind down a little after the initial take off (i.e. closing a gap between 2 cars in a line) before using the clutch pedal. I assume this is allowing the load to decrease on the drivetrain enough that this isn't noticed which in the end just sounds better to me. It's just weird to have to adjust for this. I don't recall any other manual I've driven over the years do this so I found it strange.

Fun ones!
Are you sure you shouldn't be in a Prius? I keed! I'm just bitter as I wait here for my 2 door manual order going on 7 months.
