For the last year I've been battling a random issue. My Wrangler started overheating, only under load. If it got to 3500 rpm's or more for more than 10 seconds the temp would start to climb. As soon as I let off the gas or let it shift up to drop the rpm's it would cool back down to where the needle was sitting at the halfway mark. I thought about changing out the radiator or fan, but they both appeared to be working, the Jeep wasn't throwing a code, and they're spendy. I changed out the thermostat twice thinking I might've just got faulty ones, but the problem persisted. Since it wasn't full on overheating I've just put up with it.
I finally switched out the coolant temperature sensor (mine is on the driver side of the block, near the bottom in the back). I haven't tested it thoroughly yet but it's 80° today and I had the A/C on. I drove it for about ten minutes on the highway, putting pedal to the metal on the steep hills and getting the rpm's up to just over 6,000. So far so good; the temp gauge never went over half.
