it probably goes somewhere important

While doing an oil change and checking fluids, etc.; I noticed what looked to be a sediment filter next to the coolant reservoir. Anyone have any idea what this would go to? I'm inclined to think it made its way into the engine bay somehow as I've not had anyone other than myself work on the...
