Just introducing myself. My name is Mike, but my friends call me Flip (long story, but it has nothing to do with driving or jeeps, sorry to dissappint). I am a 51 year old born-and-raised Long Islander, from the East End in Riverhead. Somewhat new to the Jeep family, getting my first Wrangler in 2019, but not new to offroading. While I know offroading on LI is a bit more subdued that most other Jeep offroading elsewhere, driving on the beaches of Long Island is calming and peaceful, and you sometimes get the satisfaction of pulling out a stuck BMW X3 who decided AWD was good enough. (He was buried to the axles.) Don't get me wrong, I enjoy my trips to PA to Rausch Creek or AOAA, but I have a hard time finding the time to get out on those trails often enough. My wife loves the beach and wineries (She manages a vineyard tasting room out here on the East End.) so whether it's taking a drive on the beach here on LI, or visiting some Pennsylvania wineries while heading to/from the trails in PA, we both have our share of smiles.

As I said, I'm somewhat new to the Jeep life, but I felt the need to create this group to try and meet other Jeepers on Long Island. If I had to take a guess, about only 30-40% of Jeeps I see actually wave back. (Yes I know the Island is covered with mall crawlers. Lol) I figure most of the people on the boards here are more into the Jeep life vs. the Jeeps I see on the road everyday. I ordered my Jeep in 2018, she is a 2019 Ocean blue JLUR. Mostly stock, but slowly getting her outfitted with more stuff as time goes on.

I'm always down for a offroad trip, and if you're new to Jeeping like me, I cannot recommend offroad-consulting enough. Have taken the 101, 201, as well as the winching and recovery classes. So much to learn, but Kyle makes it "nice-and-easy." Front the basics like airing down or choosing a line to the more advanced stuff like winching, recovery or trail repairs, the classes are top notch in my opinion.

All this being said, if anyone wants to help out as an admin for this group, feel free to let me know. Or if you have any suggestions for off roading trips, even if it's a day trip somewhere local (but legal), feel free to post. I would like for this to become THE LI Jeep club. I'm not sure if I have the time or dedication to devote the time it deserves, but I'm going to try my best. I am very easy going, so if I need to take a backseat to someone who does a better job than me, I'm ok with that. If you have ideas, speak up, let's make this the best Jeep club anywhere!

If you've read this far, thank you for taking the time to read a little about me and my motivations for creating this group. Feel free to introduce yourself here so we can all learn a little more about each other and the Jeeps we know and love.

Thanks for reading,
Mike

Thanks for starting the club and the write up Mike. I’m 59, married, 4 kids, grew up in western Mass and have lived in Long Beach since 98. I did a lot of wheeling in my teens and twenty’s, but then other things took priority in life! The profile photo is me in my 1st commercial Jeep, an early 70s CJ5. My true first Jeep was an M-38A1 that my Dad and I bought in pieces and put together in our garage. Nowadays I drive a 2020 Gladiator and have owned 3 other Jeeps in between. I hear ya on the lack of Jeep Waves on the Island! Last year my daughter and I drove cross country on Route 66 out and several northern routes back. For one of our driving activities, we kept track of waves on single lane roads! Oklahoma and Colorado were the clear winners!
We wheeled a few spots in the southwest, Achy Breaky, Devils Playground, and Alta, CO.
We look forward to meeting you and other Jeep enthusiasts at the next (first) event. I’m sure I am not qualified to run the group or events either, but I am happy to help out.
Kind regards,
Jerry
