noob Question - I have a JLUR and want to get new (black) wheels and 35’s...don’t have the money to do it all at once. Was thinking maybe get wheels first then tires once my current tires are worn out. Anyone do that, or does it make sense to do? I assume a wheel that fits my 33’s will fit 35’s as well as long as I verify before hand?

Get a 17 inch wheel that is 8.5-9 inches wide and you will be fine. Make certain that you get 5x5 bolt pattern.

I thought the JLUR only fit 17inch wheel that is 7.5 inches wide. So you saying 8.5-9 inches wide will fit too? Any difference between both?
I have the rubi take offs and plan to upgrade to 35inch tires without having to use spacers. From what I’ve read, i’ll need to purchase new wheels with a lower offset/backspacing. Does the width of the wheel matter ?

Yes, wider wheels will fit just fine if the backspacing is correct. They’ll poke out more.

You can easily put on OEM Rubicon wheels with 35” tires with no need for spacers. I have them.

Yes. I actually bought a set of “upgrade” Rubicon wheels (exact same size as standard ones) and put 315/70/17 Milestar Patagonia tires on them. Keep in mind that I also have a 2” lift.

I’d like tires to stick out a bit. What is the max tire width the JLUR can accomodate ?

Any suggestions on 35inch tires with a larger width?
Maximum tire width is more a function of the wheels you’re putting them on. Rubicon wheels are 7.5” wide and about 12.5” or 315mm is as wide a tire as you can safely mount (some will disagree). If you want wider tires, get wider wheels.

Mine are just about exactly flush with the fender. If you want them to poke out more, you’ll need a wider wheel than the OEM Rubicon wheels with a different offset, or you can use wheel spacers to push OEM wheels outward. A 9” wheel with a -12mm offset will sit a little more than 2” outward. The tire size would stay the same, the wheel is wider and has a more aggressive offset. Make sense?

Makes sense. I figured that’d be the case for wider tires. I think i’ll just go with the 35x12.5R17 tires on OEM wheels.

Those will fit and work. However they’ll fit much like mine do in the photos. If you use spacers they’ll stick out more. Also, some have reported that tire shops won’t mount 12.5” tires on 7.5” wide wheels, but they will mount 315mm tires on them which is 12.4”.
