If you stop in the intersection because you're trying to beat the light say, and you start gridlock, you get a nasty ticket.

Technically, all those vehicles in the criss-cross markings (the "box") could get a ticket if their light turns red and they don't clear the intersection.

It's selectively enforced.

Everybody in that photo deserves a ticket. Including the pedestrians. I’m pissed off, and I’m not even there...

He was complaining about his middle finger hurting. potential nerve pain? He couldn’t identify what actually hurt. I also advised him to go home and ice it by holding a cool beverage later this evening. All in fun.

The wonderful thing about being a pedestrian in Manhattan is that you are required to give zero fucks. None, zilch, nada.

Just today I walked down Fifth Ave in the bus lane because of the tourists blocking the sidewalk.
