All the strengths of this great country are dropped by the wayside for various and sundry political end games. STOP the corruption of BOTH parties! Agree to disagree on so many polarizing topics, and work toward common ground. FFS, we CAN all get along.

Wait. Balance the budget, limit terms, and make the lawmakers live by the same laws as the populace.

It’s true. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau (JT’s father, and if you remember your Canadian history lesson from a few weeks ago, the PM who repatriated the constitution), said of the US:

Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt.

I think it’s safe to say that most Canadians adore many aspects of the states. We love the assorted number of Americans we are friends with. We enjoy the trade relationship between our countries. We consume American media.

But there’s a frustration too. Canada can get lost in the discussion - and not just with our American counterparts. We can lose ourselves with ourselves. Our debates, etc can end up mirroring yours because we consume too much American news. People can get riled up about our justice system, our gun laws, etc etc without actually thinking about how that issue relates to our country. We have people who think they vote for our Prime Minister, because they don’t understand the difference between our system of government and yours.

And to be clear, that’s OUR issue, not yours. We need to do a better job of listening for each other, even when the elephant is snoring.

Not to continue your political debate, but people in North Korea aren’t allowed to say anything bad about their country either.

Think about that. We CAN say anything we like. So many people in so many countries cannot. But why not start defending that THIS country is THE ONE most likely country to free those other people from tyranny. Yes, we might actually bully that dipshit regime. How is that bad? THIS country has done, and is doing it's part to clean up the environment. THIS country has made great strides in equality and marriage rights. THIS country's populace is FAR AND AWAY the most generous charity giving populace in the world. We have a long way to go, to be sure, but bashing the country as a whole will in NO WAY get us there.

I think it’s important to see all the good for your country, and also recognize where is falls desperately short.

Canada: Im proud of our social safety net. I’m proud of our recognition of the rights of the LGBT community, and of our recognition that immigration improves us as a country. But we are an international embarrassment when it comes to our treatment of our native people, particularly on northern reserves. And we all need to get on board and do the hard work to meet the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation commission.
