First problem with a tie rod that I've seen. They are substantial compared to the JK tie rod. I really wanted to post a snarky remark on his post but I took the high road. I would see this as an upgrade opportunity myself, but JL parts are hard to locate, and I haven't seen one for the JL at all.

He prolly hit a rock and no matter what was there, he was doomed. Also, might be designed as a weak spot to prevent other damage. Did he think of that? huh? huh? huh?

If it didn't snap, he would have had a bent tie-rod which would have had the same result - un-drivable Jeep.

Strength for axial forces (push and pull) is simple cross sectional area. Strength for bending is also cross sectional area, but the more "meat" farther from the center, the better. That's why I beams are that shape. A hollow rod is more efficient (more strength) than a solid rod of the weight.

No idea what the pin is for though. Maybe to provide a threaded sleeve for the TRE to attach to? The sleeve could be an insert with a stay-pin.
