To throw additional flames on this fire, don't forget about the trade unions. Electricians, laborers, millwrights, carpenters, plumbers, etc. Most of these union members learn their trade through the apprenticeship programs created by the union. They don't always work for one employer. Instead, the union hall acts much like a temp agency. When a contractor needs labor, they get members off the out of work list to work on that project. When they are no longer needed, the workers are laid off, and wait for the next call. One individual member could be employed by 12 different contractors in a year, one contractor, or zero. Depends on the demand. Major projects bring in traveling members from across the country(ies) to fill in as needed.
Plus I don't think I'd call this a fire, but more a meaningful discussion. We haven't devolved into name calling (yet) and I still do like RA.

very well, I've learned something new today. I assume Union employees (that don't otherwise hold a job that a member holds) do pay income tax though?
The members pay tax on their wages just like nonunion employees.

Example: Fred the Steelworker gets his paycheck from Mine, Inc. Federal/state/social security/medicare taxes withheld just like all employees.

The dues the members have deducted are sent to Steelworkers Local Union #1234. The Local then negotiates on behalf of the members using the dues to fund that process. A portion of the dues also gets sent to the International Steelworkers Union that coordinates all the locals.

yes, I understood that Steelworker union member John Doe pays income tax.

I was asking more about UAW President Gary Jones who no longer hold a job as an auto worker but as the president of the Union still paying income tax?

Absolutely! He is an employee of the International union. He gets a W-2 just like you. Taxes withheld, and dues to his union as well. (And his wages are public information if you know where to look.)

And because I'm a nerd: The 2017 report shows that particular fellow as a Regional Director. Wages of $140,368. Dennis Williams is listed as President and wages of $170,108. Each had allowances (probably for a vehicle, etc) of $6,600.

I will define an "Outside Union" as a major entity like the United Auto Workers that has its own executive board, and has members from multiple companies across multiple industries. Reading their Vice-president's bio, it looks like she went straight into union organizing out of college (all the others started out as normal members, even one from NC) without ever holding a job as a regular union member.

If there are no other possible forms of employment elsewhere and the sole employer has very poor pay, or otherwise poor working conditions unionizing does make sense in that situation. However in today's economy there are just too many new employers popping up that there are always job openings somewhere local.

I'm also afraid that nearly doubling the minimum wage will do more than make your coffee cost a mere $.25 more and come close to doubling the price. I also believe in paying workers a living wage, however the jump that the NC legislature is talking about will cause a lot of smaller companies to either vanish or cut employee hours in order to survive.
We will have to agree to disagree on whether all members of society are able to change employers for better working conditions.

In Ontario, we didn’t have as far to come to raise our minimum wage - it had been kept low for years, but not like yours. However, we have seen a boost to our economy since the minimum was recently raised.

New learning for me! Thanks!

Yes, all employees of a union pay tax. I’m assuming all employees of a church/charitable organization/etc. also pay tax. Similar situation.
