Mine is produced in my building with a boiler that runs on heating oil. Since the boiler serves the whole building, its cost is just rolled into our rents. I do know that ConEd (NYC's energy utility company) generates steam for parts of Manhattan, but they're no longer expanding the network.

I have yet to meet anything that can match a steam driven cast iron radiator for heating power.

And there is the added benefit of the soothing clanking noises.

Heat pumps are supposed to have an "emergency heat" setting for these sorts of scenarios...but for whatever reason, the thermostat didn't have that setting.

Yep. This was prior to current house. Fuel oil furnace.
