Ooh, I wanna know this too. Just looked at pellet grill for the first time when I sniffed around the tempting smokers outside Home Depot last night

No clue...I had an indirect I really liked but it died after 5-8 years. They don't sell them anymore. It was compact too which was really nice. Father got into smoking, but that takes a bit of time. Unsure if the pellet grills are too much in between to be worth it though? I haven't had a grill for over a year now, so I may as well be a communist, lol!

I've been Q-ing for 30 years and this is my take on Pellets vs Gas vs Charcoal and the difference between a good grill and the cheap ones '

I'll try to make this short and sweet : what type of grilling will you do the most ?
1) direct grilling like steaks / chicken / pork ? - gas or charcoal works best
2) indirect grilling with food off to the side ? - gas , charcoal or pellets will all work ( gas is cheapest and less messy )
3) Smoking your food ? - slow and low 250-350 degrees for long periods of time - I vote pellets or wood ! ( hickory / pecan / oak -etc)

" Using wood will work with any of the methods above but the storage will take up more space than others "

- Pellet grills are mostly used for slow and low heat - Pork butt / brisket / whole birds / ribs
- pellets are more expensive but have less ash than any of the others

Grills are the biggest factor in which ever way to want to BBQ !!!!
everything has to do with how much you use it and how well you take care of it !!

Depot / Lowes grills are what I call disposable ( 2-3 years tops ) and you will probably order parts within the first year like grates , flavor bars -etc.

when selecting your grill you want to look at three things
1- the grate material - this will be the first thing to go if its thin metal or porcelain coated metal so I always look for stainless steel or heavy duty cast
2 - the flavor bars are also one of the first things to like above
3 - the box or body and hood should be vented with adjustable vents and not just perforated metal to ware you can't adjust the heat and they should have a clean out so your not scooping out ash which is a pain !

I could go on and on about BBQing but the bottom line with me is : Pellets are nice if you want to throw something on and walk away but if you want to sear a nice rib eye with those perfect grill marks then pellets wont give you that because they can't get hot enough .

I've made my own smokers and grills , Ive had depot / lowes grills and I've had big boy grills that have lasted me years !

best basic charcoal grill by far is the Weber because you can do all three with it - smoke - direct and indirect
best gas grills out there are getting harder to find within reason of being budget friendly but I would prob go with Napoleon or Char grill

All depends on how much you will grill each year or year round like I do and what you will mostly be cooking
