Maybe, the 2-3" I think, factory isn't much over 6-7 inch travel. Fox will give 9-10 odd from memory.

You need to look at Collapsed and extended length. Not the marketing drivel. You can work it out by measuring eye to eye and subtracting bump stop space for Collapsed. Then find a shock that goes a little less than that, with as much stroke as you can find. You will probably max out around 9-10 inches stroke.

You will need to check cables when drooped so you don't tear shit up... And see if your springs come loose.. Which they probably will (spacers are a cheap fix) .. You will get into a loop of upgrades if you don't go in with a spec to build to imo.
Springs coming loose is less of an issue with a spacer as you effectively lowered the upper coil bucket by whatever height spacer you're running. On an XR there is enough bump stop to run metalcloak rocksport shocks and even with the full 30" extended length utilizing 12"+ of travel the coils were still tight with a 2.5" spacer. For that kind of downtravel you will need longer swaybar end links. With that amount of lift you'll want at least adjustable lcas up front to fix the caster. With just those simple mods you can wheel the hell out of an XR on 37's. If you really want it to handle great at that height I'd recommend front control arm drop brackets, but you could do those instead of adjustable lcas and still be under $1k into the suspension with a rig that will ride better than almost any kit that doesn't lower the control arm mounts or isn't long arm in my experience.

Except the rocksports kind of suck. They are way too soft imo.

Agree on that, that's why I went bilstein 5100s on the 2022. We ran rocksports on the 2019, upgraded to fox 2.0s after 15k miles. I prefer the digressive valving on the 5100s and they are ~$200 cheaper than the 2.0s.

An update on mine after 7500 miles with the longer Mopar LCA's, Rocksport shocks and Terraflex 1.5" front spacers;

It still drives great! The Rocksports might be a little on the soft side and I'm thinking I might want to switch them out for something else when my 35" BFG's wear out and I install 37" STT Pro's or Nittos, but they work acceptably well with the 35" BFG's right now.

One other detail - Final length on the Clayton Overland swaybar links came out to 9.75" center to center.

Any issues with the clayton links, did they ever get close to inverting? Also, did you ever swap out your driveshaft, or see any wear from so much droop? Basically eyeing your setup as an upgrade to my XR next year

The Claytons are adjustable and I have them set at (I think) about 9.75" center to center. They work fine. The stock links probably would have inverted if I'd left them on. And yes, with this much droop I need to shop for a front driveshaft at some point. Either that, or switch out the Rocksport shocks for some Bilstein 5100's with a couple inches less travel as mentioned above.

Got it. This will work perfect for my plan then. I can swap the rocksports, links, and a new driveshaft in as phase 1... and after a wheeling season or two drop the rest of the metal cloak 3.5 gc lift in - no wasted / redundant purchases. I appreciate your answer!

There has got to be alot more XR builds out there. Im thinking 38s, fender chop and just tweaks to suspension.

I was thinking the same thing. I just got a 392 XR a few months ago and am thinking the AAL Fender Chop and Inner Fenders and wouldn't 38's fit? Or even the 39" BFG's that measure out to 37.5?

I don't need tires until either the fall of this year or spring of next but I'd like to get this worked out now.

@Zandcwhite and @Roky might be able to answer. Here are a couple of pics of my 23 JLU XR fender wells. For added weight I have front and rear ARB bumpers with Warn Zeon winch and RSE step sliders. OEM rims and tires, Teraflex spacer lift to reverse some sag and get out of the ridiculously long front bump stops. Full fender chop/gut, and Motobilt inner fender liners. My uneducated guess is putting on 37s for the street without rubbing is much different than having them off-road and getting full articulation.

The stock suspension has limited uptravel thanks to the long bumpstops (good for clearing larger tires but not good for any kind of spirited driving off road) and limited downtravel thanks to the short travel shocks. You could easily gain 50% more suspension travel with just a set of shocks. I'd personally do springs too in order to gain uptravel, or at least a 1.5" spacer. We did 3.5" springs on our xr paired with fox 2.0s and no fender chop. Works great but did have to add 1" of bump stop to clear the 39s. That wouldn't be necessary with fender chop and new liners, but in my opinion the suspension could use some help.

The gutted fenders would definitely clear 37s. 39s I'm not sure but you might need to add a bit of bumpstop.

after the spacer lift and longer Bilstein 5100s…sorry for the terrible pics but just to show some articulation

38s will fit and you’ll be fine on road with it chopped and gutted…… but you’ll need to lift it a little, and put on longer shocks etc. for it to work good off road….it depends on what you want to get out of it that’ll determine how much you need to do…

This was my plan until I took mine to Moab. As others have said, the 392s have longer bumpstops. Crawl under there, you will see about 1/2" between the bumpstop and the bottom of the spring pad. Which means you have about 1.5" of up travel. I was bottoming out in Moab on just some basic dirt trails.

If you want to wheel it, you are going to want longer springs and shocks.
