I bet they stop like a train, too
I don't believe they're allowed to go very fast (or at least I hope they're not) or on busy roads.

Knowingly exceeding the towing ratings of your Jeep, what could go wrong.....

even the 2.0 can easily pull more weight than 3500. power is not the issue. never has been.
controlling the load is what matters (turning, slowing down, having enough beef to prevent the sway from taking over and the tail starts wagging the dog).

length has a lot to do with it. the 2dr is 2000lbs, the 4dr is 3500, the gladiator is 7000lbs. length stops the trailer from wagging the jeep.

Some will pick and choose what manufacturer recommendations to follow. IE- Toss out Jeep’s…. all the while following Blue Ox’s. They’re all there for that margin of safety.

I would recommend the 4XE for towing.

I have a 392 and everywhere I look it says the tow capacity is the same as the regular Rubicon Unlimited, 3500 pounds.

I have a 20 foot Geo Pro G19BH Travel Trailer I would like to tow with the Jeep on occasion, The trailer weighs 3,178 lbs dry.

We would likely be over 3,500 pounds with the trailer loaded and over the max tongue weight of 350 lbs at 411 lbs.

I do have a weight distribution hitch if that matters. Also there will be 2 adults and 3 children ranging from 3-7 in the backseat. We do have a trailer brake controller as well. No additional lift on the 392 but I am running 35's.

I used to tow my boat with my lifted TJ all the time when I was younger and never even thought about weight, looking back I was way over on the towing capacity and hitch weight.

I was hoping the 392 would have the listed tow rates higher. Does anyone have any opinions if the setup I describe above would be OK to do? Would it be unsafe? Would it damage the Jeep? Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated, Thank you!
Well if you’re looking to do some serious towing you’re definitely looking at the right vehicle a wrangler. There’s a new 392 towing option. It’s a fifth wheel package. You remove the rear seat and a fifth wheel plate goes in its place. Everybody knows the wrangler is a serious towing machine. The only thing better would be the 4XE. That’s the jeep towing champ. Actually it’s does everything perfect and better than 392.

I'll give you my former scenario when I had a JLU (non-392 but that doesn't matter here).

The payload capacity per the door jamb placard was 850 lbs.

Me, wife, 3 kids totaled around 750 lbs.

That meant that as soon as we all sat down in the Jeep, there was 100 lbs. of payload remaining.

If you consider that most trailers/campers are set up to apply 10-15% of their weight onto the tongue, and tongue weight subtracts from payload, that meant that we could legally pull 1,000 to 1,500 lbs. at that point.

Keep in mind that we haven't even accounted for camping gear inside the Jeep.

So legally, you can very quickly run out of towing capacity on a JL. <1,000 lbs. of towing means you realistically aren't going to be towing.

This is why the JT Gladiator became so popular with people who overland and camp. You can order those with literally 100% more payload capacity, which opens a LOT of doors for usability with a family.

Good luck...
I think the 2dr JLs have something like 600lbs payload, can't recall when I looked a friend's but it was shocking. Then again, my Honda Element only has 675lbs and is much more cargo inclined.

And yes, JT Sport has about 1600lbs of payload, Rubicon only about 1100lbs (from the ones I looked at based on door jambs). For overlanding, 400-500lbs of payload was more important than lockers or swaybar disconnects. That's the beauty of Jeeps: off-road capable vehicles for almost every occasion.

JTs will also tow twice what a JL will.

Been a big appeal but from what I've heard, still struggles and isn't fun to tow with
Depends. Uphill? Yes from what I heard. But OFFRD did some towing videos showing it was ok for the class of vehicle

Found this interesting. Looks many countries have a legal towing speed limit, well under various US highways

When I lived in Germany it was really common to see the "80" sticker on the back of a caravan.

Perhaps speed does really kill and this is the solution......

Call LOD off-road. Their rear bumper replaces the factory hitch mount and ties it to the original hitch mount location as well as the frame rails. As you only need ~500lbs more tow it is worth calling them.

Their rear bumper uses 8 additional 14mm bolts to attach to both ends of frame rails - 4 on each rail - plus the original 4 pickup locations for the factory tow hitch. The question is did LOD pull test a bumpers tow hitch and to what pull rating.
That looks like a nice bumper however I wonder why they left the plugs at the bottom to get torn off instead of recessing them in.
