Would you get a 4xe again if you could go back in time and do it over again?

If you own a 4xe, if you went back in time would you still buy a 4xe?

Works great if your trips are short and you plug in every time you get home.

This thread is well past anyone’s wanting input. ;)
Yup, but opinions are a lot like a**holes. We all know everybody has one, but some people just can't stop themselves from trying to shove theirs in everyones face.

The 4xe is great for a 50 mile (or less) daily commute. It's bloody awful for a 130 mile daily commute.
Completely agree. :)

Even with this being our second, even with our mostly positive experience, I'll be the first to say, it's very use case sensitive. Your example of a long commute is a case where I most likely wouldn't own one (as the only vehicle). To be honest, I probably wouldn't even own a Jeep in that scenario at all - including ICE - if I was going ICE, I'd score an M3 Comp xDrive ;)

I had a 2023 4xe Sahara as a rental vehicle last week in SoCal. When I picked it up, computer showed 22.6mpg. And the rental companies don't charge the batteries (never got above 1% charge). After a tank refill, I reset the computer to see what it would average...19.7mpg. Because it never saw a full battery charge, it never went more than about 150ft on batteries before the 4cyl kicked in. My daily work commute averaged about 34 miles each way.
Unless you have a way to keep the battery charged (*cheaply) AND don't plan on long drives, I wouldn't consider one. Add to that a reduced range during cold months and that becomes a solid deal-breaker.
*My wife and I have Wrangler Ecodiesels (2020 Sahara & 2023 Rubicon) and average >26mpg. Love the diesels!
I am not sure why they have 4XE's to rent, its really dumb and as you said they are never fully charged, and how many hotels even have a charger. They only reason is the discounts they got on the vehicle - the fleets can still get the $7500 tax credit, so that really lowers the investment, but it sure is dumb.

We rented a 4XE on Turo for a week when we went to Hawaii as I was going to rent a Jeep period and I wanted to see how the 4XE's were. But even though our parking garage at the resort was huge, no chargers there. There were "free" chargers at the mall, but they were ALWAYS full and always with the same cars - most likely mall employees, so I could never charge it up. It was a good experience overall, but yeah, kind of dumb.

The typical use of a PHEV is cover the all of your 14 mpg daily driving using the electric range, charging multiple times possibly to keep covering the short daily trips.

Then use gas for the infrequent long go anywhere do anything trips.

A PHEV should never be charged during long trips, there is no need for it, just run gas at 20-25mpg.

People like to conflate the 20 electric city miles with 20+ mpg highway miles, it doesn't work like that.

The 20 electric miles handles the local trips that would be @ 14 mpg, which is where the 49mpge comes in to play.

Aside from the electric driving, the 4xe can be used without charging, and used just for the performance benefits, but that is up to the person buying it to decide how they want to use it, are they buying it for electric driving or for performance, or for both electric and performance,.it's up to them.

I drive a couple hundred miles to the cottage, when I get there plug it in using the 120v and drive around town, on the beach etc, if I can't plug it in I don't care, I have gas like any other Wrangler.

The commercials and glossy prints show all electric driving far away from the city, yea, people should know that ain't exactly reality, well sorta, you can E-SAVE Charge and accomplish that, when I'm heading to the cottage, I'll esave charge 30 minutes before I exit the highway, and have enough charge for electric driving a few miles to the cottage on the local roads.

That is the beauty with the 4xe, no charge, no problem, just use gas.

I agree with you 100% - but no one else really understands that distinction. It is really, honestly, too complicated.

When I run errands in town, pick up the kids from school, etc., I can mostly get there and back on a single charge. It is pretty cool. In the winter running the heat(er), I get less and sometimes I need the ICE for the last mile or so, but it fits that use case perfectly.

When I drive and hour and a half to pick up my kid from college, I don't even bother to look at the battery charge level. For funsies, I let it get down to 50% and then turn on the ICE portion for the highway drive and then stay in ICE until I am close enough to ride battery until I get back in my garage.

Both use cases can be true and the OVERALL NET BENEFIT is what I am looking at. I don't sweat "burning" all that battery power on the highway and complain like some mouth-breather. It isn't for that. The NET BENEFIT is being on all battery for my short hops to and from town, not flying at 75 MPH on the highway for a few miles on battery.

* as long as your home electrical rate is less than the price of gas. For these states, if you are using electricity from the local power department, charging at home is likely more expensive than what you would pay for in gas:

This. We're seeing 78 cents a kWH here in so-cal during summer surge pricing.

I’m in CA, too, but my city utility provides electricity and my rates are 0.14/kwh base, 0.16/kwh past the minimum usage (the Jeep gets me into the higher rate). Most of California gets electricity from PGE or Edison, private companies which are lawsuit fodder because of fires, which spend excessive amounts for upgrades and which give tons of money to their top management. -- all charged back to customers.

Indeed. Here in CA I'm paying 34c/kwh last I checked, so charging up my battery is at best a wash, or maybe even costing more than the gas equivalent. Mostly I just charge mine to reduce how often I have to go to the gas station, and to allow me to use more battery more often for more torque up the mountains. It's most definitely not saving me any money though.

Not sure I would after less than three months. It has already spent a lot of time in the dealers garage. It is certified pre-owned which goes to 2029 and 100,000 miles. I assume this just covers engine and drive train repairs. I am still waiting to get a copy of the warranty to see what all is covered.

Our electric summer rate is 10.95 ¢/kWh, and non-summer is
0-100 kWh 9.55 ¢/kWh
101-1,000 kWh 8.85 ¢/kWh
1,001+ kWh 8.74 ¢/kWh
