Would you buy another 2.0T? Why? Why not?

I just posted a near-identical question over in the EcoDiesel forum.

I’ve got a 2020 JLUR with a 3.6L and a manual. I love the Jeep and it’s perfectly configured… except for the drivetrain given where I live.

I live at 5200 feet, and routinely go to 8000+ on weekends. This is where the naturally aspirated 3.6L really falls down. The eastbound climb up Vail Pass on I70 has me in 3rd gear, winding out the engine just to stay at highway speeds, uphill, at altitude. I LOVE a good manual transmission, but this one just isn’t. Much ado has been made of the clutch issues, but even that aside the shifter does not add to the experience.

I can get out of my 2020 3.6L and into a 2021 2.0T relatively easy. But should I?

My Jeep usually gets driven long distances on weekends, but I do take several short trips during the week as I usually commute by bus, or work from home.

I’d love to know if you’d buy a 2.0T again, and if so, why? If you wouldn’t buy it again, why?

Any help is much appreciated!

I would definitely buy the 2.0T again. Really good gas mileage for a brick on wheels and plenty of power. It's been a solid performer for me. I've got a little over 6k miles on my JLUR and my girlfriend has almost 12k on her Sahara with the 2.0T etorque.

Definitely, I have put 4,000 miles on mine since I bout it at 27,000 in March. Not one hiccup and it was a rental prior to my ownership.

Getting pretty decent mileage averaging 22mpg 50/50 mixed. Although cruising country roads at 50 sees my best mileage at 24. This all with not so light nitto tires.

Yes I would and I have. I have two JLUR's with the 2.0T.

Since you live at a high elevation, as do I, the 2.0T really shines where the 3.6 falls flat. l test drove both the 3.6 and 2.0T on US HWY 50 going up to Lake Tahoe and the 3.6 was a dog compared to the 2.0T. That little turbo'd 4 banger feels like a rocket ship in the mountains compared to the 3.6.

I've had zero problems with either one.....30K on my 2018 and 20K on my 2019. Well, I've had one issue. The stock battery on my 2018 had to be replaced last week, but that's not due to the engine.

You couldn't discount a 3.6 enough for me to buy one. The only other engine I'm interested in is the 392.....but who isn't??!!

Where was this thread before I ordered a 3.6? 😂🤦🏻‍♂️
There's several threads about the better power and fuel mileage of the 2.0T. They tend to get drowned out by those with the 3.6 proclaiming that engine is more reliable, etc. With all of the oil leaks, failing sensors, oil filter cap problems, etc. the 3.6 engine is having, I do not regret my decision one single bit.

Yes, 2.0 has more power and gets better mpg. The 3.6 is full of issues on the JL.
I don’t think I’ll ever own another modern diesel. The diesel exhaust and the DEF systems are garbage. They are notorious for malfunctioning and the parts/labor are extremely expensive. If you got the ecodiesel for the fuel economy then you messed up. It would take like 20 years or more to make up the difference in cost to purchase the diesel package. And the diesel maintenance is 2 to 3 times more expensive on every oil change, fuel filter, etc.

Absolutely would buy 2.0 again. I have 2019 3.6 and 2021 2.0. I live at 7000ft and the 2.0 out performs the 3.6. Most of my driving is between 5500 and 8000ft. I have taken both over 12000ft and I don't notice any loss of performance in the 2.0 from lower elevations. Mileage is decent and I use 85/86 octane.

I would buy it again as well. I live in Colorado too so the turbo really made sense for me. I have owned 4 previous vehicles with turbos and they really shine here. I've had mine 7 months and 5,600 miles and it's been trouble free and gets decent MPG for what it's hauling around. The power is great too.

On my second 2.0 in two different makes of vehicle. I hope the 21 3.6 Rubicon the wife just got can keep up. It was a great deal. We had one in a 15 GC with the 8 speed and it was better than our 17 JK 3.6.

I live within 100 feet of sea level and I would absolutely get the 2.0 again. Great engine that still surprises me at how quick it is. I never had a 3.6 in a JL but in the JK it was only ok though I hear with the 8 speed it is better.

Jeepless but still a fan.
I'd buy one again in a heartbeat. 10k miles on mine, and while it takes some getting used to to hit the gas pedal and have the screaming afterburner of raging squirrels spin their wheels....the power is undeniable, I can pull 25 mpg average on the highway all day, and it loves altitude.

Thanks, all. It looks like I’ll be getting the 2.0T but in 4xe form. Most of my driving in under 20 miles round trip so I’ll probably live in electric much of the time, and have that big 370ft-lbs of hybrid torque when I need it. Wheeling in full electric sounds perfect too.

I decided to lease the 4xe given the newness of the tech.
