I am going in AGAIN for the 3rd time to have the same steering stabilizer replaced to stop Death Wobble.
Good luck to you. I'm now on number four, won't know until Monday when I'm on the highway if the problem is fixed but since they didn't replace the damper again I'm not holding out a lot of hope, the problem remained (but noticeably better) with the fourth version.

Why aren’t you asking for a replacement jeep

Fair question. I may tomorrrow after I see if this weekend’s last attempt worked. It’s a royal pain, I’ve been through the process once and won but wow what a pain. And the dealer of course doesn’t notice any problem, which of course is expected, the final fix was a “minor alignment adjustment.” Dealing with arbitration and then lemon law claim is painful, even though I’ve met all my state’s thresholds.

Thanks for the tip, I appreciate it and will talk to the dealer.

The problem with with the damper was that nobody could get it in stock - its a known problem, they are getting them in for the "death wobble" constantly. Apparently the rebuilt damper was also faulty, they are now working on the third design of the part and there are still problems after it is installed.
I was having some wobble issues (at 1000 miles) and took it to the dealer last night - they replace the steering damper. According to the service advisor, this is a brand new different part than before......Just an FYI....

Thanks, they have resigned it a few times now and I’ve had them all according to the dealer. I’m told the last “fixed” damper has the same part number as the second redesign, but there is a “build date after xx/xx/xxxx” that is the newest and greatest part. Just didn’t resolve my problem.

So it's probably the same part.....ugh. I hate that you're having to deal with this. Maybe go to an independent garage? I'll let you know if I have another wobble episode.......

More positive caster goes a long way with these JL's.

Look into adjustable control arms or caster correction brackets. The most positive caster you can get without having driveshaft vibrations will give you a more confident steering wheel feel and less wobbles. Pair that with a good stabilizer and you are golden!

Any update? They replaced my damper a few weeks ago with a "all new damper" and it's been great. No wobble at all (knocking on wood..).....

I will let you know when I get it back - it is currently in the shop for the sixth attempt to fix the problem. I’m not alone, my dealer has had a few that have gone through all the same unsuccessful attempts to fix as mine. Fingers crossed, all I want is a safe Jeep.

I put the Teraflex Falcon steering stabilizer on mine, completely gone, it's expensive, but worth it and you can adjust the feel you like in the steering wheel.

I have a 2018 Sahara unlimited jl with 8500 miles. I experienced the death wobble a short time after I bought the vehicle . I have had the steering dampiner
Replaced once. The same issue presented itself again within 30 days I am having the same part replaced again tomorrow morning. I am being told the replacement part is the same as the last and will also fail . I asked my dealer what else they can do to fix the problem and they do not have an answer. This is my third jeep and I am very frustrated. Thoughts?

Hello ekimgnuj,

Thank you for letting us know - anyone still experiencing this concern is welcome to private message us so we can work with your dealer regarding further diagnosis. Please include your VIN and dealer name/location if you send a PM!

I have a 2018 lju that has been at the dealers three times for the “death wobble”. I drive primarily highway miles without any suspension modifications. At about 28,000 miles I ran over a bridge expansion joint and had my first taste of the death wobble. Took the Jeep into the dealer and they replaced the steering damper... I am now at 32,000 miles and have had the steering damper replaced three times by the same dealer!!!
The last replacement was ‘an upgraded aftermarket unit’. Over the last weekend the problem has returned. I have been asking the service manager if the steering issue could have a different root cause... I don’t think the dealerships or ‘technicians’ have the ability to do a real diagnostic. ‘The tech guide says wobble is steering damper’. Apparently it isn’t.

I also own two Jeep JKs. A 2014 that my wife drives and a 2008. My 2008 has close to 300,000 miles on it... I feel safer driving it than it’s 2018 replacement. (Yes I still have the old Jeep).

Where can I turn to get this taken care of?
I spent a lot of money on a Jeep I don’t feel safe driving.

Show him the Star Case and show him there is more to the treatment of these issues than that. Sometimes you have to show the service techs and reps how to do their own job, or find a better dealer. One thing you can do easily is show him where it says to loosen and then retorque every bolt. Then apply the new alignment speficiations. That might be enough. If not, look at the new track bar and also examine the drag link joint where it connects to the pitman arm. It pretty much has to be something in that chain of parts.
