Winch in the desert? / Winch Anchor?

I don't know about you guys and your trees, but out here in the South West we've been busy exploring the desert for the last couple of decades and being desert and all, there's no tree in sight and often no large rocks (see example of the places we go here, and note that we've been exploring with our 95 Tahoe, our Rubicon JLU is on order and scheduled to arrive in a couple of weeks).

What are you guys doing if you need to winch in the desert?

Anybody with experience of Winch Anchors (aka Sand Anchors) have anything to share?

I wasn't aware of this product but it's really interesting and I'm very tempted.
- just put off by the idea of digging a big hole in desert heat (smile).

Rest assured, I was thinking that, but having been out in 118F and above...

Actually I was thinking of going for redundancy and going with two options, because of how serious the consequences can be. We cary enough food and water for a few days, but you don't mess with the desert, as many have found out to their cost.

I like that. Yeah, digging the initial hole = not so much fun but it looks much safer than the metal sand anchor. As someone who's been boating since I was a kid I just don't trust anchors to stay put. Overnight anchorages always called for regular check by whoever had watch; most of the time everything's fine but it's not something to take for granted. Bad enough when your boat starts to drift but I'm looking at that thing and thinking about it popping loose under load and flying through the air . . . that ends in tears.

If you are regularly offroading in desert like conditions without a winch point, invest in a set of maxtrax. They are worth their price tag. They are much faster to deploy, you don't have to spend an eternity digging a hole only to find out the angle isn't quite right and the winch pulls out whatever you buried, they can be used if you are alone, unlike a sand anchor, etc. Bonus is that maxtrax can get you going in many other conditions, and can also function as ramps/bridges.

Are they really that good (and yes, we do)? I remember reading reviews a few years ago about them breaking and not being of use. But from your comments I should look again - thanks.

Yes they are, when they are used correctly/properly. Spinning tires on them will result in melting off teeth (although you can get replacement teeth on ebay made out of aluminum. Watch this video at 22:50....that's probably nearly 10,000lbs of vehicle on there. There is a reason any expedition anywhere or anyone worldwide that does any REAL off the grid offroading carries a set of maxtrax.
