Every Sunday, thousands of Californians leave Vegas to go home after their weekend of fun. I work in Primm, Nevada located on on the state line. Here is a pic of todays bumper to bumper traffic on IH-15 for 12 miles between Jean and Primm Nevada.

That 12 miles takes an average of 45-60 minutes to get thru if there are no accidents. Today the traffic started at 11am and it is now 8pm and still there.

I drive thru the desert for the 12 miles to bypass IH-15 every Sunday night shift.

The dirt covers the bumper sensors after a couple miles is the reason for the yellow alert on the side view mirror. Not like there is a car in my blind spot. You need 4wd to get to the desert then it’s go as fast as you want on the dry lake bed while IH-15 traffic is at a stand still.

Yeah, this is a great example of "Its a Jeep thing" most don't get to experience.

Good to see people actually using their Jeeps as intended. Scenic views and no traffic... doesn't get much better!

Uh oh, now that the genie is out of the bottle there will be bumper to bumper Jeeps flying down that lake bed. Oh well, you had a good run :)

I made such a mistake, where I took a shortcut for years and avoided a good 30 minutes of a normally 45 minute ride back home some 15 years ago. Made the huge mistake of sharing my ''secret'' to a few coworkers one day. Seriously, within a month, the traffic through my shortcut was so bad that the normal route was suddenly the shortest.

Word from person to person spreads so darn fast, it's almost unbelievable.

Yesterday I saw 8 vehicles making a desert path to the stateline (about a mile from my path). In 18 years of working where I do, I have never seen that. Turns out google navigation is routing people to a point where they end up at the end of another road used by gravel haulers. Drivers either decide to back track 4 miles and back to the interstate traffic so they decide to keep going forward along the rail road in the middle of the desert.

I took that route ONCE 10 years ago. It is so washboarded my JKU had the aftermarket muffler disconnect at the slip joint connection. It held on to my Jeep by the rubber hanger. I had to pull it off throw it inside the Jeep and continue. Those navigation followers have a bumpy ride in store.

I have learned to be really careful about following the navigation software routes as I have been taken on some strange routes when going places.

Once, when towing my Jeep behind an RV, I followed a route that first took me over some overgrown road to a tiny wooden bridge which then went to a really rough off-road trail. I would have been fine with the Jeep, but not with an RV, and the bridge was barely weight rated for the Jeep.

The navigation software has told me to go through people's driveways and backyards, has taken me off of the Interstate only to tell me to get back on and sometimes routed me through cities, with all of the traffic, when there was a clear bypass around the traffic.

The nav software is OK, but you have to take it all with a grain of salt ...

I know exactly where that lake bed is! We flew hot air balloons across it a few years ago.

Another Sunday night shift and my usual route. This is the one obstacle that separates the cars from the 4x4
