Just bought my first Jeep last month and right around the 1000 mile mark I started noticing a long howling / whining sound that would come up when I accelerated as low as 25 mph and it would die down when I came to a halt and the engine would auto shut off only to start again as I accelerated.

I noticed that the good gets overly hot in any 1-1.5 hr of driving but since I never owned a Jeep before don't know if that's normal.

Posted this question on another thread and they pointed to the Turbo 2.0 as the possible reason. Called my sales rep at Jeep today in Mall of GA and he said that he never heard of this and I should bring it up to service. Anyone else experience this?

Are you sure it isn't the fan? Mine gets louder at higher rpm and quiets down when I slow down. I can hear it but it's not crazy loud.

As far as the hood getting hot I'd say it's probably the 100 degree weather we've been having the past few days. I bet any cars hood you touch in this heat after driving will be hot.

How are your coolant and oil temps??

I've took my roof off this weekend (for the first time), and certainly noticed the fan running, which I haven't noticed before. 2.0 Turbo here.

It was hot here in GA this weekend :)

It's mid 90's in Charlotte now and the fan is running a lot. It's very noticible but it sounds like its running smoothly. Just a loud fan sound.

That is the go-to answer for anyone with a V6.
It's always the turbo's fault.
Not saying it isn't, but more likely something not related to the 2.0L itself.

May just be the fan like everyone else is saying honestly, especially if it starts and stops with accelerating/slowing down. It was getting closer to 90 the other day here in PA and I noticed it for the first time since I got my Jeep back in February. Definitely caught me off guard at first and I had to get out of my Jeep and pop the hood to fully realize it was just the fan. :CWL:

Curious to see how this unfolds since I'm currently considering the 2.0. Turbos do not like to get hot so I'm assuming it's the fan if you're driving for as long as you stated and if it's hot in your area.

Just heard mine for the first time today with no top on. Definitely sounds like a cooling fan. Cooling fans normally shutoff when youā€™re at speed since the airflow over the engine is sufficient. They turn back on when you slow down. At least thatā€™s been my experience. This thing seems to be doing the opposite which is strange. I wonder if itā€™s a cooling pump for the battery?

I hear it too and would like to figure out what it is. Annoying!

Remove the hood, get your craziest friend and strap him to the grill, drive 25+ and have him report back.

That's how we did it in the 90s :)

I heard it too yesterday on a run up in the mountains. It's annoying. A little speed and it goes away. It sounds like a dragging wheel bearing or transmission whine. But it's not either of those things.

I think this might be different than what iā€™m hearing. Mine getā€™s louder as I speed up. When I slow down it stops. I think what youā€™re hearing is the whine of the electric motor.
