To make a long story short, Vroom is now offering for my 2018 Sahara with 8,000 miles $3,000 more than it did back in June. I am seriously tempted to sell it and order a 2022.

I am looking at a fully-loaded Sahara in Sarge green with Saddle leather and automatic transmission. But I keep going back and forth on which engine to get.

I started my build with an EcoDiesel: it looks great on paper -> 400+ lbs of torque, 28 MPG, front and rear D44, 3.73 gears. But I have been reading that it feels front-heavy, is a chore to maintain, those humongous bumpstops limit articulation and, less face it, it has a less-than-stellar reliability record.

The eTorque V6 is grossly underrated IMO, Jeep did a terrible job marketing it, but those who own it seem to love it. Also, the V6 would allow me to get the Selec-Trac, which is a big plus. The V6 is unsexy but proven.

I considered the 4Xe, too; the all-electric mode would be perfect for my short daily drives. But I am not sold on relying only on the 2.0T on longer trips to say, Death Valley, hauling that massive, heavy battery under the rear seat dead for hundreds of miles without a place to charge it. There are also some ordering/pricing restrictions on 4Xe at the moment.

If you had a chance to order a 2022, which powertrain would you get and why?

Please don't forget to cast your vote.

That Etorque V6 was on Ward's 10 best engines in the world list when it came out. That was the 3rd or 4th time a version of the Pentastar has made the list.

I prefer the straight V6 without the Etorque, for its simplicity, but of those powertrains you listed, the Etorque would be my choice.

1. 392 V8, if they weren't raping you with the price.
2. EcoDiesel, if I could find a place to reliably modify and take off the emissions.
So, being the choices that are posted are limited, a V6, like I have now.

If I was buying new today, I would go ahead and get the Rubicon 4xe. I like the blue stitching.

But really, I figure if you’re going to have all that complicated electrification, might as well go all the way.

Can I vote for the EcoD twice?

As far as why, it's simple. 442 lb/ft of torque at 1,500 RPM, 24 MPG, 450+ mile range, and NO WAITING FOR HOURS NEXT TO AN ELECTRICAL OUTLET. The cost per mile is identical to the 4xe without the headache.

The P-star is a great engine, but 260 lb/ft of torque is so 1994. Hell, the 4.0L V6 that Nissan dropped 20 years ago still trounces the P-star.

you aren’t factoring in maintenance costs at all. The eco diesel is the most complicated vehicle on the road.

Why sell a JL Sahara for a JL Sahara?
Because Vroom is offering me significantly more than I paid for it. That's all.

But you are still buying the same thing. You wont be making any money after taking taxes into consideration would you?

If I were you I'd get a willys XR, or a Rubicon. Take advantage of the new offerings. Specially since you like running 35inch tires you can get the gearing and everything. Great opportunity to upgrade in my opinion.

If your Sahara has been good to you and reliable. Then why sell it? get into the lemon lottery again.

Care to elaborate?

Oil filters are $19 to $43 depending on brand. OIl is $3.79 a quart. The fuel filter is $39 every 20,000 miles.

The powertrain warranty is 40,000 miles longer than the gas offerings.

Rumors of EcoDiesel expense are usually blown a little too far out of proportion.

Just wait until that eTorque 48V battery system or MGU dies, or the 4xe electric motor or battery fails. You want to talk complicated and expensive? The EcoDiesel will seem like a gift compared to that. I've already talked to technicians about those issues on the hybrid stuff. It can get ugly.

Not really. I still remember when a V6 broke 200 HP: it was in the late 1990s; the Infiniti QX4 with the 4.0 Nissan used in the Pathfinder. That was on premium gas! That's how big a deal it was breaking 200 HP!

The 4.0L inline six in my 2001 Grand Cherokee cranked a whopping 190 HP! 😫

If it was 2 or 3 years from now, and all bugs were out, the diesel.
Torque and fuel economy for the win.

If it was today, the V6.
