Where is the 2nd battery?

You guys will think I’m nuts, but today I disconnected the ground off my battery while installing a CB radio. While I was working on it, I heard the HVAC motorized damper moving. I pushed the start button and everything powered up. I jumped out and double checked the battery. The ground lug wasn’t anywhere near the battery. I didn’t try to start it, but everything was powered up (including the CB I just installed). I didn’t have time to look, but something was powering her up. Tell me I’m not going crazy!!

It’s behind the fender under the main battery. There is another thread that shows a picture of the battery with the fender off. Don’t ask my how to access it though. Lol

And, that second battery supposedly can start the JL even if the main battery is disconnected.
The secondary battery is circled in green in the pic below.

So what is the reasoning behind the second battery? Can the second be replaced for a better one and remove the one under the hood to free up space?

The second battery is for the ESS system. It comes with two batteries and a beefed up starter to deal with frequent vehicle starts. A single battery wouldn't hold up for very long in city traffic.

The ETorque system will have a different 48V battery in a different location.

Just for reference here is a picture of the stock Mopar 2nd battery. I was surprised it’s an AGM.
