Yup, that is a way... I did the same for a few years.I just use a Velcro strip and put my tazer right next to my sgw
I had followed you instructions on the correct way it should be hooked up and I do appreciate all of your advice and input! No cables=no problemsIf you remember correctly, I replied to you about this once before.
The security gateway extension cable in question, was designed with one specific purpose in mind.
@jludave
@Ratbert
Yes, over the years guys/gals, have used the extension cable in other ways.
Guys have hooked up assorted modules directly to the disconnected security gateway cables using the extension cable...
... I very recently saw where one guy used the extension cable in conjunction / to help hook-up a dedicated device at the SGW that deals with start/stop.
-> Yes, you can actually have 2 of the extension cables in play and working aok, on a single vehicle..
Anyway... use of the security gateway cable sold by ZAutomotive and also by the Chinese manufacturer of the extension cable worked for them in those different ways.
--Back to the original reason for the extension cable... You install it for its intended purpose...
You want to install it once so you do not again, have to deal with the 2 difficult to disconnect , fairly easy to damage, connectors at the security gateway.
Again, the extension was designed with one specific purpose in mind..

Trivia:
The SGW Extension Cable is fabricated in China.... thus the "Made In China" label on the bag that the SGW Extension Cable comes packaged in.
Joe Z. (ZAutomotive) was unable to source this particular extension cable from a USA supplier.
Lots of JL owner's were hounding Joe to come up with an SGW Extension Cable... no extension cable was forthcoming... Joe was having trouble sourcing the offering,
Anyway @SwissSteph a forum member from Switzerland got a Chinese company to make the cable.. He / Swisssteph was on a mission so to speak and did all the leg work.... he contacted a company in China and got them what they needed to know, etc., to fabricate the extension cable... and to send it to Swisssteph in Switzerland.
Then, SwissSteph came to the forum and told his tale... that he acquired a SGW Extension Cable.
Right away, I told Joe about SwissSteph and him getting the company in China to make the cable and Joe, immediately contacted that Chinese company (with info provided by SwissSteph) and placed a big order for them .....Joe began ordering the cable in quantity, from that Chinese company..
Joe was smart thinking as usual and told the Chinese fabricator of the cable to wrap it it black cloth like the Jeep factory used versus the plastic wrapping that the Chinese had used.. this way if anyone looked at the installed SGW Extension Cable they would think it was a factory installed cable.
SO.... that is the story about the terrific SGW Extension Cable, we all LOVE.
And yes, you can purchase the extension cable from a Chinese seller.. I did ..... but do save yourself a headache and just order one from ZAutomotive.
Thanks again, @SwissSteph ! Thanks, Joe!
.
I was hoping that one of the multiple locations you lived in was NJ or close to it. You definitely know what’s right and why things are wrong complete with an explanationYup, that is a way... I did the same for a few years.
Was a pleasure though to finally get a holder and the security gateway extension cable..
In 2018 when the Tazer JL first was born, and for the first few months especially .... I was marrying, unmarrying, trying different modules, changing firmware daily or every couple of days.. Joe, had me going through the passes so to speak..
For sure.... I do not miss disconnecting and reconnecting those 2 security gateway cables! I got real good at the deed but what a pain in the fingers it was...
Funny.... now a days, my dealer Tech friend sends guys/gals my way often to have me set them up with/install a Tazer JL, JSCAN with dedicated SGW module.... or a combo of both. I probably average 4 to 6 such installs each month.
Yes, I charge a nominal $ fee or do a barter.. Yes, I have them get and I install both the holder and the extension cable.. I do a professional install and no Velcro in the mix.
Anyway, these days, I have my gal pal come to the garage and do the security gateway cable disco deed for me.. She is petite, small hands and it is an easy deed for her to do.. She's done the disco probably 50+ times or so over the years / since 2018. She gets the deed done in probably a minute's time..

Like I mentioned before, there are a lot of smart people on this forum.I am glad I have read this thread because I installed my Tazer JL Mini on my 2022 Willys with the SGW extension to the cables and not from the SGW. Dah! I thought it was to add length to mount it where ever you wanted. Fortunately I haven't had to unmarry the the JL Mini. I corrected my error this morning and life is good. Thanks Rhinebeck01 for the clarification on the proper installation. I guess I should have read the instructions when I first got it. My Mini has always worked well and has enabled me to make many custom changes as needed.
I might have missed it, but did you address my question? Please ignore the people that are using it for other purposes. The vast majority of us aren't (intentionally) deviating from needing an extension for the basic desire to not have to deal with plugging / unplugging so far up under the dash.If you remember correctly, I replied to you about this once before.

Sorry I have that title affiliated with my nameI might have missed it, but did you address my question? Please ignore the people that are using it for other purposes. Let me try again:
If I have the SGW extension plugged in, the Jeep is working, and the Tazer is working, then it's plugged in correctly, right? You're making it sound like it's far from idiot proof and I'm just trying to make sure I'm not being an idiot.
Yes.If I have the SGW extension plugged in, the Jeep is working, and the Tazer is working, then it's plugged in correctly, right?
Yeah, that's why I don't understand the dire warnings from @Rhinebeck01. He doesn't usually say things like that w/o a good reason.Yes.
I've got mine mounted on the bar behind that kick panel with one zip tie. I can even access the USB port though I haven't tried to update with it plugged in. I'm not worried about the Tazer so much as the whole Jeep getting stolen.Thank you, With people stating that the PIN to start becomes nonfunctional when the tazer is removed?
I like the factory clean look that the mount that you have under your dash.
I was just not sure if it was worth going through the trouble of hiding it under the dash was worth it. I did get lucky with removing the two connectors, I was able to press the release clamp on the back of them with a modified screwdriver and they came right out, plugged into the extension cables and then into the Tazer. I understand making the Tazer easy to get to will help with the update down the road. Input is much appreciated.
While under there I was thinking about where and how to mount my secondary kill switch.
I have read where people suggest a 12 volt disconnect switch but taking 12 volts to the system and killing it seems like it would cause all kinds of issues besides resetting the clock

Not a "dire" warning by me....Yeah, that's why I don't understand the dire warnings from @Rhinebeck01. He doesn't usually say things like that w/o a good reason.
