Looking under the bonnet it is clear something has been gnawing on the rubber trim pieces - presumably while sitting under the bonnet on the windscreen cowl.
I would much prefer it to nibble on this than my wiring harness, but any suggestions on how prevent the rodent from getting there in the first place?
Mouse traps on the top of the tyres? :)

Looks like the work of a mouse. I reckon they climb in from the tyres so probably best to place traps around there. If you can securely park indoors in a garage, maybe keep the bonnet opened and leave your garage lights on. Sounds counterintuitive but the rodents like to shelter in dark warm places.
