My opinion is neither. Save that money and put it into a more useful mod like lift, winch, bumpers, 12v cooler, or whatever direction you’re wanting to take the Jeep

Thanks. I guess I should add I use my Jeep as my daily driver as a sales rep. About 30k miles a year. Looking for ways to boost my mpg a little.

Just set it aside until you come across something you really want. I’ve never seen consistent or verifiable proof of an increase in mileage in either product across any brand I’ve driven. The exhaust could get annoying also if it has any drone. Being that you’re driving so much, I’d want it as quiet as possible to not interfere with being on the phone.

I have both of those parts, neither are installed yet. I just like the sound and understand I will likely see any power or mpg gains. Brett is pragmatic, but do what makes you happy in the end.

CAI and/or exhaust won't do that. Won't appreciably boost torque/hp, either. Good driving habits and regularly scheduled maintenance will.

Not familar with how restrictive the JL system is. But as someone who is active in the modern muscle car scene a CAI and exhaust is almost always a good way to increase hp. Freeing up restrictive exhaust components will definitely increase mileage as well.

Are there any before and after dynos with a JL CAI or exhaust to show any gains? I would not dismiss either until i saw some proof one way or another.

Comparing the 3.6L Wrangler to a muscle car? LOL!

Gains at best are usually in the single digits. Even then, they only show up at or near redline. Some manufacturers (K&N for one) do publish them.

CAI and a catback exhaust would be a waste, at least on the performance side. You would gain minimal or next to nothing gains, and nothing you are going to feel on a two ton plus brick going down the road.

Engine is just a pump, 2 less cylinders does not change that. Make the pump breath better and it will perform better. I have done before and after dynos with intake manifolds, cat-backs, headers, CAI,s and they always show gains in the 5 - 20 rwhp range and up. And in a significant part on the whole curve. I am not sure where the mentality comes from around here that these things dont help performance. Unless there is data to back up the claims that the stock system is that good on the JLs.

And you're still comparing apples to oranges. I've done it before, too, but just opening up a couple of holes makes no appreciable difference.

The ONLY way they help performance significantly on a stock internal combustion engine is if you also have the capability to "turn up the fuel" by reprogramming the air/fuel ratio (not possible yet on the current Pentastar) or rejetting the carb (which is pretty much a relic now on modern vehicles).

Yes, tuning is definately a plus. Usually not necessary with minor mods like cai or cat back though to still see gains. Once you go full exhaust with headers you will generally creat a rich condition, not lean. Again, maybe your right with the 3.6, but untill i see a before and after dyno i will reserve judgement.

No aftermarket manifolds or headers possible on the 3.6 because the heads and exhaust manifolds are cast as one unit.

Don't use improving gas milage as an excuse for either of these mods. $300-$500 will buy a lot of gas, I doubt you would see that much efficiency return in the life of the JL.
