I would like to use this as it came with my winch. However, there is no way to connect the one end to the battery because there is no room. If I could extend the threaded post somehow, it would be ideal. Or I would need a short battery cable, connect it to the battery terminal and the other to the winch overload protector. Then the winch positive cable to the other end of the overload protector.

Or do I simply leave the winch directly connected to the battery as it is now. The winch has a power button on the front, currently in the off position.

Thoughts?

You might think about covering that somehow since you now have a big electrical hazard out in the open. If something strikes against that and grounds out, it could short out and cause you some problems.

I set mine at that angle as well, and was not happy with the pressure it would put on the negative cables beneath it. So I didn’t go that direction.

Maybe I’ll revisit it again tomorrow. There must be a better way. Thank you for sharing the info and images. They are helpful.

Looks good but I would run a small cable to the overload protector and hide it a bit better. Otherwise, clean install.
I think that’s what I will do. Short positive cable from battery terminal to overload protector and and positive cable from winch to overload protector.

Throw that garbage away and use one of these instead:

They’re available in pretty much any amperage, so you don’t likely need the one I posted specifically, but you get the idea.

I added a price of 3/4" hose over the cable to protect it. Zoom in and you will see it.
Yes, the base is always positive but I'm not worried about it and are aware of it.

I'm just going to unbolt and wrap it in a good electrical tape. Bolt back on. I'm good with it.

I ended up with this. Rubber pad is underneath and all taped up. Ran zip ties across to hold it in place.

It’s not pretty by no means, but it’s done and all functions.

So what AMP version would be needed?

Looks like the max amperage listed is 355. Is the circuit breaker that you’re currently using marked at all?

I didn’t notice or look prior to taping it all up. I can ask the manufacturer I suppose. At this point, may just leave well enough alone and roll with what was provided.
Thank for the reply.

In all honesty, it will probably be ok. But being in the auto repair business as long as I have been, I’ve seen a ton of those auto reset breakers fail. Thankfully they almost always just quit working vs. melting wires or catching on fire. I’ve never seen the style I posted fail. I would definitely put it on the “to do” list, but it’s not urgent by any means.
