My first 4x4 and first Jeep was a 1949 Willys Wagon, which I ran all over the desert around Tucson when I was an undergrad in the early 70s. It looked kinda like this one.
For my second Jeep I found a 1969 C101 Jeepster Commando...very cool.
Whn I had kids to haul and less off-roading, I went to a 1974 Grand Wagoneer.
Following that, I had a long stretch of Ram 4x4 pickups, but my wife was using a 1996 Cherokee Sport
This summer she decided my 1997 Ram was too horrible to look at, and ordered me to get a new car. Since I'm keeping the truck, hidden behind the barn, I can have something less utilitarian.
So, there you have it...50 years of Jeeping history
And yet...in another thread, I note people saying that if you leave the roof on and dont go rock-crawling, you're a poser and shouldnt even own a Jeep. Just like those guys who own a 'vette and dont race. I will admit that 40s and a 6" lift are silly if you dont offroad. But a stock Wrangler is just a useful ride for some of us who live rural, especially in the Upper Midwest. That Wagoneer is awesome!!! You're a purebred, man!!
Lol, these folks don't have a clue that a Jeep is THE vehicular representation of function over form, which originally had absolutely nothing to do with being a toy. It just happens to fill the role of toy as well as it does the role of utility. And yet...in another thread, I note people saying that if you leave the roof on and dont go rock-crawling, you're a poser and shouldnt even own a Jeep. I know that for some folks a Jeep is a toy, or sporting goods. And I know there are people who use them as cool symbol. But, for some of us, a Jeep is a vehicle. It's an excellent vehicle with lots of capabilities, just the way they build it in Toledo. Yeah, I could get use out of a Forester or a FourRunner...but those are compromises. Jeeps are real.
As you say, "kids". However, without the young, you and I would have had to find other employment. I'd have said that "Jeep is a perfect case of form following function"...very much what you said, and why 90% of people wouldnt know an MB from a JL. Hell, tractors have changed more in appearance than Jeeps.Lol, these folks don't have a clue that a Jeep is THE vehicular representation of function over form, which originally had absolutely nothing to do with being a toy. If I told one of them "real Jeeps have a PTO," they wouldn't have a clue what that is and that the original CJ's had all kinds of attachable implements for doing all kinds of work.
Lol, kids....
