I've only had my Jeep since July and today I noticed this on each side behind the front axle. What are they? Something that should have been removed after shipping?

They're "flag nuts". Modernized nuts from factory.

Yes, it is a new kind of nut designed for aftermarket parts that need to be secured in a hard-to-reach spot.

Or in FCA’s case, most likely a nut they missed during assembly and had to put on afterwards... :CWL:

A flag nut is just a nut with a tab so it can be tightened without having to hold a wench on that side.

Thanks for the responses. They just look out of place.

The are ugly, and fairly visible. The odd thing is with the access hole on the outside of the frame, they seem Unnecessary.

Drop a regular nut and washer down into your frame and the use of them becomes brilliant.

If it is on the left side, it is the muffler bearing access point. On the right side, blinker fluid drain hole.

If it is in the middle, just back away from the Jeep slowly and call the authorities...

I was a uhaul hitch mechanic for years. I have dropped many a bolt into a frame. Fortunately, it was somebody else’s frame. LOL. Back in the 90s we used nuts with a wire welded in one side. When you impact the nut it sucks the wire into the access hole. Getting them back off was a mother stinker

It is an aid for installation of the nut. Makes life easier for the operator on the line.

It makes life easier for you as well when you are installing a lift kit by yourself because your friend douched out and can't make it.
We must have the same friends
