Other than widening the stance, why use them?

Allows more room for bigger tires. For the JKs that had narrower axles, they were needed more than the JL. A taller tire would rub the control arms and/or frame without the spacers.

As i found out during a recent offroad excursion, it also helps prevent damage to your fenders.
