I had 285/75/R16 on my 2011 sport with no lift and they fit perfect. Apparently I have no idea what I am doing because I wanted to put 285/75/R17 on the new jeep and town fair tire told me that would never fit without lifting & changing the rims. New Jeep is basic sport model. I mostly care about max width of the tires because I think stock tires look like training wheels.

I've read several post where people have stated that they put 285/75 r17's on Wranglers with stock rims and have had no problems (the biggest that I've heard will work). I'm planning on putting them on ours, but haven't yet. 285/70 r17's is done all the time (Rubicon take-offs)

A 285 width has nothing to do with lifting a JL. I put 285/70R17s on my first Sport before it was lifted, but the height is different than the tire you mentioned.

All depends on your intended usage and level of intensity, but they definitely “fit.” A bit stuffed, but they fit. I ran the below combo a while w/o issue, but it was 100% pavement . . . mostly weekend trips from brewery to brewery 🤪. Anything off-road and I probably would have lost a fender

I'm often occupied, by many things, often at the same time
You won't find rims on Jeeps. Rims aren't really a passenger car/light truck thing. All of our vehicles have wheels.

I'm guessing you posted this as a trick question.

From your post it appears you may not realize that 285/75R17 is an inch larger than 285/75R16. 34 inches vs. 33 inches.

I did not realize that, but he said 265 was the highest I could go and I’m not sure if that’s actually true or if he’s going by a manufacture recommendation

He's wrong on the width there. Thousands of people run 285/70R17 with zero problems. As to 285/75R17, you'll want to search the forum. I think it's one of those where you will rub offroad or on large bumps.

check offset distance - that is what counts - which is why the recommended sizes are what they are - otherwise get a take-off Rubicon set - best and cheapest way to go.....

A 285/70/17 will fit your factory wheels. It will have pretty much the same look as the 285/75/16 on your JK. They are both about 33" tall, You wont need a lift of any kind. If you want the wider stance that the Jeep in your avatar has, you will need some wheel spacers too.
