I picked up a few SIDIO crates for storing kitchen/camping gear. Original plan was to stack them to the right of the fridge. But once I add a Vector GGB shelf and fridge, they will be tougher to get it and out. I wondered if I could mount some drawer slides to the bottom of the bottom-most crate for easier access.

Questions:

1. Does anyone know of any drawer slides (only need 16” or 18”) that would work in this use case? With the tight tolerances, I don’t think a traditional side-mount drawer slide would work. I see “Pantry Slides” or “Television Slides”, but they all stick up a couple inches - I was hoping for something a bit more low-profile, so I can fit 3 of these crates underneath the shelf.
2. Would it be possible to take some regular drawer slides and turn them 90 degrees and mount them flat? I saw this question on an Amazon listing, and the manufacturer said you would lose 90% of the weight rating if you did that (I assume the ball bearings wouldn’t be riding the way they were designed).

Pre-made then places like Goose Gear make them.

Do it yourself, some computer server rack slides and rails, and some 1/2" aluminum square stock.

Just following up on this after trying two different sets of drawer slides:

  • Version 1.0: Used a pair of 18” low-profile, undermount drawer slides from Accuride rated for 35 pounds each. Total cost: $26.00. Result: Too much sag in the drawer slides. They would sag with only 20 pounds total weight, and did not have full extension of the drawer (roughly 14” on an 18” drawer)
  • Version 2.0: Used a pair of 18” entertainment center slides from Lee Valley Hardware rated for 130 pounds. Total cost $32.90. Result: MUCH better. Loaded the 3 drawers with about 20 pounds in each (60 pounds total), and the drawer slides only had minimal and acceptable amount of sag. Slides are designed to over-extend by one inch (roughly 19” on an 18” drawer).
Pics of Version 1.0:

Pro tip: I used the “Mat” (hard plastic liner) from another Sidio crate to create a base to more easily mount the drawer slides to. So, I have one mat on the inside of the crate, and this other mat on the outside of the crate.

And pics of Version 2.0:

These slides are not nearly as low profile, but they work SOOOOOOO much better than the others. Night and day.

Quite pleased with the result…and the cost: Less than $160 for slides, crates, lids, mats, and dividers.

Tested this out on a long weekend camping trip, and the wife loved it. Cookstove on the Outback Trailgater table, Fridge nearby, and three drawers for cooking utensils, pots/pans, food, etc.

Nice!

I have that same inverter.

Is that a shower head attached to the water can?

Yes, they call it a “Shower Attachment”, but it’s really just the same spray attachment you’’d find on a kitchen sink from the 1990s. It’s the Icon LifeSaver Jerrycan Starter Kit. Has a built-in filter, and hand pump. Only used it on one camping trip, but it worked well.
