We have Red wasp that are mean and BIG. They hurt like hell. Bumble Bees hurt like hell.

The last pic is Hornet hive that you don't want to bother. They have excellent vision and have been known to chase you for a long way and people have had to jump in water to get away from them.

That's a beauty of a nest..... They never vacate..... say in cold weather.,,,,, no way for you to harvest that nest...? That would look great handing in a Den or garage, etc..

I Googled. lol Because wasps and hornets are not made to endure cold temperatures they will die come late fall or early winter. The only ones to survive will be the mated queens who will hunker down somewhere they can hibernate until spring arrives; at which point they will start constructing a new nest.

I have never thought about searching woods for a hive. 99% of Texas land is private owned. That's why we don't really have any good off-road trails we can use. You just can't take off in country side like I see in all the Jeeper photos running around. People will shoot you or fill your butt with rock salt blast.

One year ago today, my new JLU was offloaded at the dealer. One year later, to the day, the odometer reached 20K.

This is the first vehicle I've owned that has me reaching for its keys, instead of the keys for one of the motorcycles. Good times.

Those look like Bald-faced hornets. (Which are acutally wasps) They are pretty territorial, and do like to chase people. I didn't know you had them in Texas.

Hanging a fake nest, or one of those beautiful real ones like @Rhinebeck01 has, deters new nests from being built in the vicinity, as they don't like neighbors of any sort.

From what I have read we have several types down here. I have only seen one hive up close back when was a kid. Hornets were like 2" long and the hive so loud you could it from some distance.

I have had more issues with bumble Bees really. As a kid my parents were house hunting and one house had playhouse in back year. My sister and I were jumping around inside and we started hearing buzzing. A horde of bumble bees were circling the house like you would see in a cartoon. 100's of them. My dad told us to run through and keep running. We did and I shit you not bumble bees followed my down the sidewalk and my dad running behind me had picked up rolled newspaper and was running swatting them out of the air. I ended up with 3 stings and I swelled up all over. The doctor gave us a tube of like White Jelly to spread on stings. This was back in the 60's now. lol

More exploration of the local mountains. In Southern California, we have to take any fall colors we can get! 😂

Holcomb Valley Road. USFS Road 3N16. Starts below Green Valley Lake and ends above Baldwin Lake near Big Bear. A few minor obstacles, but overall easy.

I left the Jeep parked, for deployment later today. I instead took Offspring's vehicle to the Honda dealer for replacement of the non-functioning air blend motor.

No interior heat until it's replaced, and late Oct weather in PA is predictably cold, gray and wet. 'Twas a chilly-ish drive in this morning.

The service writers walk around the vehicles with an iPad, filming the exterior condition of each one. I'd guess this could serve to protect the interests of the dealer or the owner, depending.

I saw your post and immediately prepared to start scrolling, figuring it was the nth thread of "good place" photos. This was a nice change of scenery. Well done. :like:
