Ducks, maybe if you put a hundred of them in a bag they could be used as a flotation device though??
I was wondering what to do with that bag of 100 ducks my wife gave me. I'll bring it along on our next flight abroad.

My kinetic rope is another thing I haven't used...yet. Ditto for my snatch block.
I like the aluminum rings for winch redirects, they work really well. We ran Trail 16 at Windrock right before they changed the difficulty to a double black and had to winch my buddy's JKU up a hill with a dog leg in it (hill to the left in the pic below).

Then after using the snatch ring there, ended up using my kinetic rope as a tow strap when he got crossed up bad on a steep hill to drag him out of the rut he was in and get him straight.

This is contrary to your condom analogy used for other skids
Other skids protect expensive items that need replaced, could cause a bunch of additional damage, and would then still need skids after repair. The dif diaper costs ground clearance to protect a sheetmetal cover that would just get replaced with a better aftermarket one should damage occur. I've peeled the lip on some old style axles enough to cause a leak, but never bad enough it couldn't be hammered back and sealed up with rtv. If it's not going to strand me or lead to expensive damage I'm probably not worried about protecting it. Same goes for my opinion of LCA mount skids. Is more like using a condom...for oral.

Not all diff skids cost enough clearance to matter….the ones I have cost me 3/16ths inch or 1/4 inch whatever the thickness of the steel at the diffs lowest point…while I can agree with most of this, ground clearance loss can be minimized with the right skid…..

Some are definitely better than others. Unlike the old style Dana covers, the cover doesn't flush out with the bottom of the housing like it used to. Peeling seems a lot less likely and personally I've never had an issue. One of the low profile skids could help smooth out the bottom of the dif for sliding over things, but I've yet to get hung up on my rear dif.

Not really apples to apples, you’re an experienced wheeler of many years, you’re not going to have as many issues as some others…. It’s preventive maintenance for me… my old man used to say “boy, you could break a fuking anvil” …….🤣

Which skid do you run on the rear by the way? I could see on there if I picked a bad line or slipped off a rock.

I have the Rancho on front and rear…… yeah accidents are gonna happen, but less likely with experience plus you're up on 39s, that can’t hurt either, lol..

Turn Wrenches/ Write code
Light bars get my vote. But a strong case could be made for angry grills. They are pretty useless.
Wrong. They serve as a warning of someone I don't want to deal with or have on the trail with me.
:CWL:

At first, Looking at this thread as someone with a decent amount of trail Experience, I was thinking: "Man, I have no idea what you all are talking about. I use my winch/ lift/ 37's every time I go out"; Then I remember the JK with the winch and larger tires I saw on the highway this morning and a bunch of the "instagram" Jeeps from the car show crowd kids near where I work, and I realize nope- you are 10000% correct.

I resemble that remark. I put on every available skid proactively knowing I was inexperienced. Maybe false security but I’ll give up a little ground clearance for peace of mind.

Zach, do you have an XR ? I forgot, does the front axle on the XR still have those elephant ears on the sides…. I know they used to.. the front Rancho skid won’t work on that axle, fwiw….does the rear axle have them ?
